Telecom gear maker Motorola was to buy broadband equipment maker Netopia for USD 7 a share in a deal valued at USD 208 million. Motorola has finally received the green signal with the antitrust clearance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to acquire Netopia.

The FTC has alloed the early termination on the waiting period required under the Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust law.

With this acquisition, Motorola gains Netopia’s expertise in copper-based broadband product portfolio including wired and wireless modems, routers and gateways. Its North American customers include telecom players such as BellSouth, Covad Communications, EarthLink, AT&T and Verizon Communications.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mobile phone maker Motorola on Tuesday said it had agreed to buy broadband home network equipment provider Netopia in a deal with a total equity value of about US$208 million.

Motorola said it will pay US$7 a share for all of Netopia's outstanding shares in a deal it expects to be neutral to earnings per share in the first year after closing, excluding certain noncash charges.

Motorola Inc.'s new version of the Homesight home monitoring system no longer requires leaving your personal computer on all the time to monitor its signals remotely.

The system includes a video camera and wireless sensors that monitor movement, flooding, temperature changes and the opening of doors and windows.

There appears to be an issue affecting some Motorola SurfBoard cable modems that results in lower throughput speeds when the devices are connected to Macs than when the devices are connected to Windows-based PCs.

Several posters to an Apple Discussions thread note that Motorola Surfboard 4200, 5100 and possibly other models deliver significantly lower throughput on Macs when compared to PCs -- generally with Macs achieving about one-third of the bandwidth available to PCs.

Motorola has joined the Eclipse Foundation as a Strategic Developer member and is proposing a project to boost mobile Linux application development.

With Strategic Developer status, Motorola has a seat on the open source tools organisation’s board of directors and participates in the Eclipse Architecture, Requirements and Planning councils. It has participated in Eclipse projects before but had not signed up as a Strategic Developer-level member.

Motorola's Powerline LV modem this week received approval from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), meaning the vendor can begin shipping its Broadband over Power Line (BPL) solution in the next month, company officials said.

UL approval also will let Motorola continue its testing with ARRL, the national association for the amateur radio community, said Dick Illman, a member the advanced wireless team in Motorola special markets division of engineering.
