Herndon-based RCN reported revenue increased 17 percent in the first quarter to $179.8 million, compared to $153.3 million in the year-ago period. The company's net loss widened to $26.2 million from $4.6 million during the same quarter last year when RCN booked a $15.7 million gain on the sale of a discontinued operation. RCN said it had 421,000 residential and small-business customers at the end of the first quarter, 5,000 more than at the end of the fourth quarter last year and 14,000 more than one year ago. RCN Corp., the Herndon, Va., cable and telecommunications company, says it has installed eight miles of high-capacity fiber-optic cable in Center City to sell data service to financial-services firms, big companies and institutions. Tuesday agreed to distribute the Smithsonian Channel high-definition channel as part of an agreement between the cable overbuilder and the service. With the addition of RCN, the Smithsonian Channel co-owned by Showtime and the Smithsonian Institute --now reaches 22.5 million multi-platform households. The company, which has 75,000 television customers in Massachusetts, raised monthly cable TV prices $2.99 in November. But a company executive initially said customers wouldn't be affected if they also had a bundle with phone or Internet service.
