Telekom Malaysia lost RM500,000 to cable thieves in the first two months compared to RM2mil for the whole of last year in Kelantan.

Its general manager Abdul Rashid Che Osman said 144 cases were detected from January to March this year, mostly in rural areas such as Bachok, Rantau Panjang, Pasir Puteh and Machang.

Kelantan is the sixth highest state after Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Johor and Selangor in cable theft cases.

Abdul Rashid said TM would take a week to restore power for consumers affected by the theft.

MANILA, Philippines--AFTER STAYING well below target last year, inflation is expected to break into the 4-percent territory this year amid soaring oil prices in the world market.

Penang is expected to achieve 50 per cent broad band penetration ahead of the target set for the whole country due to the greater public awareness on the facility in the country.

Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Datuk Dr Halim Shafie said Malaysia was targeted to achieve the 50 per cent broad band penetration in 2010 but Penang could be ahead as current usage of the facility had now reached 30 per cent.

In view of the rapid penetration, it was possible that Penang could achieve the target next year, he told a press conference after the launching of the Streamyx 2.0Mbps and 4.0Mbps package, which offered free trials of the IPTV for selected areas in Penang and Kulim, by Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye, who is also Chairman of the Penang K-ICT Awareness Committee, here Sunday.

Fitch unlikely to change TM ratings
11:24AM Thursday Dec 20 2007 by sashwa
Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) ratings are unlikely to change as a result of its demerger exercise, although greater clarity is required on several issues, a global ratings agency said.

Fitch Ratings yesterday reiterated its initial view that TM’s long-term issuer default rating and instrument ratings were unlikely to change due to the exercise. However, more light had to be shed on issues such as the final terms of TM’s public-private partnership with the government for the high-speed broadband (HSBB) project before a final rating decision could be made.

“Any material divergence from the information currently available to the agency could result in a negative rating action or a change in the outlook, although a scenario is not anticipated,” Fitch said.

New Species Found in Remote Asian Sea?
(old news - 09:47PM Wednesday Oct 17 2007)
A square jaw and edgy brow give a distinctive profile to this boxfish, one of many exotic marine creatures recently found by scientists exploring Southeast Asia's Celebes Sea.

The international team of researchers recently returned from two weeks in the Celebes, a little-explored sea between Malaysia and the Philippines that is home to one of the world's deepest ocean basins.

The Celebes's relative isolation and chilly depths make it one of the world's most richly diverse marine habitats, likely hosting species that have lived in seclusion for millions of years, expedition leader Larry Madin told the Associated Press.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the service, which will enable speedier Internet connectivity, would offer competitive rates to encourage more broadband usage.

“If the rate is too high people will not subscribe,” he told reporters after receiving contributions at Mindef from Bakti (Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers) and 61 other bodies for Hari Raya goodies to be presented to armed forces personnel.
