Only one day after officially assuming control of Iowa Telecom, the Windstream Corp. announced plans for layoffs in Newton.

Windstream officials said Thursday the restructuring affects its operations in both Iowa and Minnesota.

Officials say the plan includes eliminating approximately 60 positions, including 35 in Newton, as of Aug. 2. The positions being cut are mostly in accounting, finance and marketing.

Officials say the affected employees may apply for other jobs with the company or receive severance benefits.

Windstream has started The Lifetime Tour to promote its Lifetime Price Guarantee to consumers who want to lock in a price for life on high-speed Internet and home phone services. Windstream provides phone, high-speed Internet and high-definition TV services.

In an outrageous tactic, Windstream is suing dozens of retirees who objected to the company's plans to cut back or eliminate their promised health care benefits. CWA represents more than 1,300 employees and 3,000 retirees at the company.

An equipment malfunction at Windstream’s Lincoln switching facility caused the problems Thursday, and affected more than just Lincoln. Many customers across 22 counties were unable to contact 911.

Windstream Corp has agreed to buy Iowa Telecommunications for $530 million, excluding $598 million of debt, as it looks to offset declining revenue from continued disconnections of home phones.

Dutch Dine, senior engineering outside plant project management with Windstream (formerly Alltel), recently met with Salem Township supervisors to discuss leasing 25 square feet of property to set up a broadband hub.
