MSNBC's Bob Sullivan, in a published excerpt from his book Gotcha Capitalism, explores the long history broadband providers have with bogus fees. Most of his examples we've discussed here at length, such as Verizon's attempt to hit consumers with a bogus "supplier surcharge" fee, even after the FCC dropped the $2-$3 USF surcharge from DSL lines (something providers such as BellSouth and Speakeasy quickly copied). Theres only one way for sneaky companies to beat back honest competition: sneaky fees. By breaking out items such as regulatory compliance, DSL providers can hike prices without having to raise their advertised prices. Those $19.95-per-month marketing campaigns dont have to be scrapped. Companies wishing to pump up their bottom lines can just raise the fees instead. Of course it's a practice most regulators seem perfectly content to let continue unabated, even if it is a form of false advertising. 64 comments DSL provider Speakeasy is gearing up to unveil ADSL2+ service starting this week, Broadband Reports is the first to reveal. We spoke with Speakeasy CEO Bruce Chatterley concerning the new service, the company's evolution and their relationship with new owner Best Buy (covered below the break).
