| Sacramento-based SureWest Communications offers consumers a mix of fiber to the home service and ADSL2+. Surewest already offers IPTV service to its fiber customers, who can get symmetrical service at speeds up to 25Mbps for $70 bundled, $84 unbundled. Customers out of range have had to make due with vanilla DSL, though last fall the carrier started offering users bonded ADSL2+ services at speeds up to 10Mbps ($31.99). Surewest now says they're going to offer IPTV services to those customers before the end of the year. The company says the new IPTV services will reach 25,000 customers; 15,000 customers will see the service by December 2009, and an additional 10,000 will be connected by the second quarter of 2010. According to the company, they've made the jump to MPEG-4 compression and are using the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV platform. Surewest remains an interesting mish-mash of DSL and fiber, older and recently acquired networks. By assigning two customer pairs to each home (assuming a second pair is available), Surewest is now improving service reach, while bumping the speed of their 3Mbps tier to 6Mbps, and 6Mbps tier to 10Mbps. Surewest says they're offering twelve month introductory rates of $27.99 for the 6Mbps tier, and $31.99 per month for the 10Mbps tier. "As we continue to expand our advanced fiber-to-the-home network in Sacramento and Kansas City, we are also creating a superior customer experience for our copper subscribers by providing them with the most bandwidth and highest speeds technology allows," says Surewest CTO Bill DeMuth. "Bonded DSL allows us to provide faster Internet speeds deeper into our copper network, and now over 50 percent of potential DSL subscribers have access to 10 Mbps." 20 comments Last December, Sacramento-based SureWest Communications announced plans to acquire Kansas City-based Everest Broadband for $173 million. Not all of that bandwidth can be used for Internet access, the company offering 20 Mbps connections for $91.99 when bundled with one other service, or $191.99 for 50 Mbps service. The deal will bring 200,000 revenue generating units (each RGU is an individual component in a triple play offer) under their control. The deal also gives Surewest 117,000 new voice access customers. The deal will more than double SureWests triple-play residential subscriber base -- though many of those customers are getting fiber services back home in California. Back in March the operator laid claim to being the "fastest Internet speed in the country" after they started offering 50Mbps symmetrical fiber. 9 comments ·more stories, story search, most popular ..
