As part of their
earnings report, cable provider Knology (
see our user reviews) says they're increasing 2009 capex by about fifteen percent, in order to expand broadband into a few select markets, as well as selectively deploy DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades. According to the carrier, roughly twenty percent of their network was supposed to be DOCSIS 3.0-enabled by the end of last year. That number is supposed to jump to fifty percent by the end of this year, with the rest of the upgrades completed by 2010. Speaking on a
conference call about their earnings, Knology CEO Rodger Johnson says the upgrades will occur "on a market-by-market basis as the competition situation dictates."
Back in November, NebuAD and several of the ISPs who were doing business with them (Embarq, WOW, Centurytel and Cable One)
were sued over their plan to sell subscriber browsing histories without giving customers a functional opt-out mechanism. As we've stated in the past, NebuAD's system opted users out of receiving the system's targeted ads, but it didn't opt them out of
data collection and sales.
