    My Other Reviews·Charter Pipeline
I upgraded to Earthlink's DSL from their unlimited dial-up program. This is not the first time I have had DSL, though -- just the first time here in California.

I ordered the service and got my equipment less than a week later! Pretty darn fast, IMO. However, it took another 3 weeks for the service to be connected. They had aproblem figuring out who the CLEC was (Verizon is the TELCO, but it was GTE months before).

Download speeds are well above 900 on average, sometimes cresting the 1Mb mark. I have not yet had a service outage. Upload is usually 300+.

My relocation, with no phone number change and just a change in apartment numbers, took over two months! This was completely ridiculous, and it almost made me switch to Verizon -- in fact, I would have if it weren't for the sacrifice in speed AND the contract I am under with Earthlink.

-- Since this review, I have not experienced any significant outages or delays in service. I am still pleased with the quality connection and prompt, friendly customer service. I have also added a static IP to my package, and am very pleased.--

-- Removed the static IP --

-- A year later and service is still good. --

    Verizon vs. EarthLink

    Verizon is the TELCO . . .

Most likely EarthLink is buying from Verizon and reselling to you. Why choose to have a middleman? I do not understand that.

You mention a "Relocation Service Nightmare." That happened because you had EarthLink. Having a middleman complicates all of the issues. You ask EarthLink, and all they can do is ask Verizon. With DSL, the company that owns the equipment is the one you want to do business with.

    Re: Verizon vs. EarthLink

Verizon wasn't offering comparable deals at the time.

Anywho, I've since moved and subscribe to Charter cable.
