I ordered EarthLink's Freestanding DSL service back in June 2007, shortly after they began to offer this freestanding / dry loop service. I placed the order via their online chat. This method of ordering was convenient since, at that time, I wasn't sure if I actually wanted to go forward with the order. I was able to leave the chat session open for quite a while, while I researched other options online. Once I decided to place the order, the chat rep took my basic info and then emailed me a link to complete the credit card billing info.
It took longer than I expected to get the service up and running. I was hoping it would happen before my FOC date but it didn't. On the evening of my FOC date I looked outside my home where the phone wires come into my building and realized they were not connected. Verizon had obviously been out to the box because there was a new label on the lines with my DSL info, but they didn't connect the lines for some reason. I connected them myself and my modem (Zyxel P660R-elnk) sync'd up right away. I input my PPPoE username and password and was online.
The DSLine quality for my home has never been the greatest (not related to Earthlink). It holds Sync fine but sometimes will lock in at a lower upload rate. But lately it has been sticking above 700kpbs. Forgot to mention I ordered the 3MB down and 768Kpbs up service. First two months were about $20 and the remaining months for the one year commitment are $40.
So far I am happy with the service. I am hoping there will be less outages than I had with cable internet service.
