I was originally with Mindspring back in the fall of '99. In 2004, I upgraded from dialup to DSL. Up until then, I was pretty happy with the company. The IE toolbar was pretty useful at the time and the fact the service gave users a bit of webspace didn't hurt either.
After I got the DSL, things were pretty decent for the first year or so. I had an occasional connection issue with PPPoE where it would drop out and start to reconnect. Sometimes it wouldn't happen for months, other times it would happen 2 or 3 times in one night. Not exactly the most reliable of 1.5 meg connections.
By this time, Tech Support was being shifted to India, and getting any real support for my DSL connection started to go down. At one point, tech support 'increased' my DSL speed from 1.5 meg to 3.0 meg in order to 'fix' the issue, which saw my dsl cost jump by 10 bucks without my consent, and it actually made my connection problem worst, since my CO was 10k from my house.
So I just begrudgingly paid my 40 bucks for my DSL for about 3 years or so. Earthlink still charges me 40 bucks (no additional fees) for the DSL, even though I could probably have switched to Bellsouth or some other DSL provider for similiar speeds for not as much.
In the end, I just switched to Comcast Cable, For 10 dollars more, I can get 4 times the speed, and I get a good amount cut from the bill every month since I have the cable TV package as well. Its not that I didn't like Earthlink, but more the fact that they're charging too much for a product I can get for much cheaper elsewhere, and there was no other way for me to get a faster speed locally without switching to cable. Plus, the service has gone downhill since the haydays of the Earthlink/Mindspring merger earlier this decade.
So thats my review. Earthlink: Its sokay. But its sort of expensive. And it costs a bit more than others. And the customer and technical service isn't so great. But they're ok.
And before you ask, no, that connection problem never did get resolved. But I'm not worrying about it now.
9-19-07 Edit: Ok, no additional fees or taxes were on the bill. Just 39.95 for a 1.5 meg connection. Its still more expensive than most other 1.5 meg DSL connections though.

| Re: Invoice check. Maybe I was wrong about that. I could have swore there was some taxes in there but the 39.95 is how much the 1.5 meg was running me. Sadly I'm at work right now so I can't really check my email right now. I'll check and if I'm wrong about it, I'll just nix that part of the review. No biggy. | |

| Earthlink ouch i have been paying 41.95 for cable high speed for 6 yrs now, and yes i get drops every day sometimes not at all. wish they could fix, but still cheaper than what my cable company charges. just did some tests and my download from miami was 6400 and 7400 from los angeles up load slow at about 400kbps. anyone know what i can do to get them to fix the dropped signal issues the only thing not changed is the main line to the house. | |

| Re: Earthlink Well, my cable speeds are much better than my DSL speeds ever were, but as for the signal loss, you'd probably have to have them check the lines for interferance, or maybe its your wiring. Either could be the reason. Bad modem perhaps as well, but I've no clue how you'd check for that. | |
