Ok ... to clear the record I used to have SNET as the DSL provider and it was good, I had no real complaints except for some latency once in a while that was more than the norm. I had heard of people talking about NetPLEX but never really checked them out because I wasn't having too much trouble. Everything changed when the router at SNET decided to take a trip to Disneyland.
The day after it fried I called SNET to ask when it was going to be back up. I spoke to a really nice tech named Maureen and was told that there was no official ETR (oof). I then asked her what I would have to do about switching to NetPLEX and she told me that she could send the info to them and once they got it back from NetPLEX they would cut the PVC over and I would be all set. I was told that the entire process would be about 3 business days. I thanked her and told her to please give me a call at work when they got the info back..
About 3 hours later the phone rang and it was Maureen to tell me that they got the info back to NetPLEX and that I was all set. WOW. Well, I called NetPLEX and set up an account. Very friendly guys, easy to talk to and they really know their stuff. I got home from work, went into the router and disabled the PPPoE, rebooted and . . . . . .nothing.
Uh oh.
It was about 8:00PM and I frantically called NetPLEX to see what was the matter. I got ahold of a tech almost immediately and we found that SNET had yet to cut the PVC over to NetPLEX (damnit) so he gave me a number to call and told me to get to it before 9:00PM because that's when the SNET guys left. Needless to say I called and got ahold of someone at about 8:15PM and asked them if they could do this little thing for me They put me on hold for 2 mins and came back on, told me to reboot and try it. Once more I go into the router, make sure everything is ok, reboot and ..... POW! Blazing fast speed, Low low low pings (sub 50ms on some servers) and no PPPoE.
I cannot say enough good things about this company. They had me switched in a matter of hours although I think that not yelling at the SNET rep helped a bit too. It is so worth the extra 10.00 not to worry about a router getting filled and run to capacity (aCk!) without a backup. The slowest speed I have gotten so far with NetPLEX is 1236 down and 108 up and that was during peak time with the server load here at full bore. I will gladly pay the 200.00 for the modem when SNET charges me. I didn't rate the news server because I haven't used it yet (still logging into earthlinks)
BOTTOM LINE
If you want super fast service with a group of guys that know what they are doing and will go that extra mile for the customer, this is your paradise.
