Executive summary: Ordering, installation and service have all been at least what I expected, if not better. Speakeasy and Covad have been very good to work with. I'm very satisfied.

12/7/99 - Called Speakeasy DSL, 800-536-5829. Spoke with Paul, x149.
Ordered DSL, 384/128. Paul said: no charge until all installed and working;
installation is free, I pay $150 for the hub from Covad, then get a $150
rebate from them; first month is free, then $59.95 + 1.57 tax. He's sending
an email with order details. He said fine to run a server, call Lisa at
x147 for information on how to setup DNS. Two visits: first PacBell comes
to install loop from my house to their office; next Covad comes to install
router and run an additional jack using the second pair. He said install is
running 3-5 weeks, which means I should expect to be done by Jan 11.

12/9/99 - Received an email from Covad, indicating that PacBell would be
here on 12/17 and Covad would come on 12/20. If this actually happens, I
will be very pleasantly surprised.

12/14/99 - PacBell showed up 3 days early. Good thing I was home. Arrived
8:15 (woke me up), installed a second wire from the pole to the house. The wire he installed has 6 pairs. Installed a new box, but didn't move the old wire into the new box, nor did he remove the old wire and use another pair from the new wire. He said I could do that, but it's a separate billable service. He hooked one lead from the box that just hangs; I assume Covad will attach this to the other pair of wires that are already running into my house. Installation time was just over 2 hours.

12/16/99 - Covad called to confirm their appointment on Monday. They said
that inside wiring was already authorized, so there should be no additional
charge to install a jack near the computer. But that would up to the
installer, he said. He also confirmed that they would be using the second
pair that already exists in my house. They won't be installing new wires
from the box.

12/20/99 - Covad showed up at 4:30, right in the middle of their scheduled
time. Installation took an hour. The technician helped me enter in IP and
gateway addresses, I rebooted and it worked. 13 days from start to finish.
Cool, it works, I'm happy.
