    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
    Updated 20.NOV.07

One issue in particular that I am following is DSL Extreme's acknowledgment of their clients interests pertaining to the increase in the newsgroup capacity/speeds. As of now and for the past 4 years, DSL Extreme has been using Supernews as their newsgroup provider. DSL Extreme offers unlimited download, but restricts users to two slow 25Kb connections for a total download speed of 50Kb connection. This is NOT fast enough by today's standards when companies such as Giganews offer unlimited downloads, longer retention periods, and will max out your connection speed-wise. There's a thread here: »a request for DSLX mgmt: faster newsgroup download speed? that discusses the issue. I sincerely hope something comes of it because it may be in my best interest to switch to Verizon as my ISP to cut costs and to use a 3rd party solution for newsgroup access.

Not much new to report. The connection has been rock solid for so long I can't remember the last time I lost connectivity.

I've lowered "tech support" from a '5' rating to a '3' rating due to the long hold times I've experienced. I had a billing question not too long ago and it took 30 minutes to speak with a representative. This is far from acceptable in my opinion. Prior to DSL Extreme's takeover/buy out by IKANO hold times never went beyond 5 minutes. Whether this is coincidence or not, only DSL Extreme can answer that. If you read the DSL Extreme forums (»DSL Extreme) you will find other people with same long hold times.

Another thing to watch out for is the "Fed Universal Service Charge". Well now it's called a "Supplier Surcharge Recovery - VZ" charge (VZ = Verizon in my case). In any case expect a ~$2.00 extra charge to your monthly DSL Extreme bill because of this. This "fee" is supposedly being passed on from Verizon.

Previous reasons for me joining DSL Extreme, such as unlimited newsgroup access (2 x 256kb connections) have lost their value as 3rd party newsgroup access has dropped significantly in price while allowing for faster and unlimited download access.

In support of DSL Extreme is the unprecedented support one will receive on these forums. It's rare that you have the general manager of any company personally troubleshoot a problem, but it happens here on a daily basis. That shows true commitment to customers which I can appreciate.

DSL Extreme also listens to its customers and both implements and changes things that customers find useful (or unuseful for that matter).

What can I say about DSL Extreme? They listened to their customers and have removed the redirects, which is fantastic! What other company can you say that about?! Thanks for listening DSL Extreme.

DSL Extreme, on day after being bought by IKANO, has decided to redirect all unresolved URL's to their own ad driven search page. This is a huge negative in my book and I believe DSL Extreme's response was inadequate (You can read what they had to say in this thread: »redirects to look-up-results.com ).

This also made front page news here at DSLR: »DSLExtreme Redirecting 404 Browsers

I would be wary as to where DSL Extreme is headed under this new ownership. I say this only a day after we, as DSL Extreme customers, were not going to see any changes, at least negative ones.

Nothing new to report. Heck, don't people only write reviews when things go wrong?

@davidlim: I apologize for not answering your questions sooner, but it would appear DSLR doesn't notify me when someone responds to my review. Anyways, DSLX turned off interleave, my pings dropped ~25ms, and I haven't lost sync since then. So, all is good here.

I'm pleased to say that I am still very happy with DSL Extreme as my ISP. The service, should one ever need it, is top notch. As I've stated in my earlier reviews, both the support found through these forums here and support via phone/email are top notch.

Once again, I must reiterate that DSL Extreme also gives you 250MB of web space (split into ten, 25MB accounts), unlimited newsgroup access (two x 25K connections netting ~140GB/month), and 1GB of email storage. For me personally the unlimited newsgroup usage pays for itself within days.

Just as recently as tonight, I noticed I have been exceptionally high pings from my house to the CO (Central Office). Now 25ms may not seem like a lot, but when gaming, low pings can make or break you. I spoke with [user=dslx_tech] here in the forums and had situation resolved within minutes. (Turn out it wasn't a problem, but rather Verizon switching interleave which upped my ping) I could not ask for better service.

I can't say enough good things about DSLX. They have been top notch. I'm particularly spoiled as we have the both the CEO and GM posting in the DSLX forums here. I had a bit of trouble with modem syncing a while back. DSLX response was top notch. The problem was resolved in no time.

Ordered DSLX on November 3, 2003 and on the November 11, 2003 I was up and running although my schedule live date was November 13, 2003. Ordering was easy and I was able to use my Westell 516 ADSL modem that I got from my previous carrier SBC/Pacbell. I have the option of going with Verizon, but I wanted some good news group support which DSLX provides with SuperNews. Even at the slightly higher price of $37.00/month USD I actually save money monthly by not having to subscribe to Giganews for my newsgroup activities.

I also like the web space given and 10 e-mail accounts! I ultimately made the decision to go with DSLX because of the good support I saw here at DSLR! Thanks George!

To answer some of the questions below, I got a 1500/128 connection ~$37.00/month with one a year contract. It's a PPPoE with dynamic IP. I used my old Westell Wirespeed 516 from my old SBC DSL connection (I moved out of SBC territory). Again, so far everything has been great!
