I am on a copper cable pair, about 18Kf distance from the CO - Just about the limit of copper based DSL service
After 3 weeks of outages and speed variations, the tech support guy suggested (during a 2 hour outage) that I remove the local splitter to reduce possible attenuation and a noisy voice line. That restored connectivity immediately.
I should have known to do this sooner, but I was wrongly focused on possiblilty of power line load balancing issues, wet cable splices, and tstorm drop out. (The trouble's leaving here fine!) DOH!
- I removed the data line from the surge protector - thereby adding distance from the wall warts and AC wiring. Next I separated the modem from the Linksys router and the PC speaker.
As a result, I have a 1.5 M connection with very little variation and only a few seconds loss of signal during a small t-storm. Now I'll buy a separate surge protector unit for the data line.
- Alternatives: cable will never be available, I had Starband for almost 2 years and was pleased with the service. However, It costs more and has a speed of about 500K.
- DSL modem is a Westell 6100.
