I had been using DSL through Speakeasy until last Sunday, when two Time Warner Cable technicians came to my condo to install a cable modem.
I made the switch because my distance from my central office (over 15,000 feet) was causing my DSL service to lapse into really bad intermittency, which lead up to recently my DSL service going down entirely. At that point I looked at my options and decided DSL was just getting to be too much of a hassle.
I first went to the TWC web site and made an appointment there for installation to be done last Saturday. (I would have preferred being offered an option for self installing, but it just wasn't there.) A family event caused me to need to reschedule that, so I called my local TWC office to make it last Sunday instead. The rescheduling went smoothly.
So, last Sunday. The two technicians showed up about 20 minutes after the start of the 3-hour long appointment window I had scheduled. The modem (a Motorola SB5100) installed with no problems at all.
I had a couple moments of confusion while getting my various pieces of software configured to use Roadrunner servers, but contacts with tech support (once by phone call, one by chat through help.rr.com) got me straightened out quickly.
I've run three speed tests here at BBR since the cable modem was installed, and have been thrilled with the results. Here are those results, along with the results from my last DSL speed test (done Feb. 13) for comparison purposes:
2004-03-09 22:18:37 Speed test @ dslreports.linkline.com 2619/339 kbps 2004-03-08 08:54:44 Speed test @ dslr-west1.megapath.net 2328/361 kbps 2004-03-07 19:12:22 Speed test @ dslreports.linkline.com 2783/358 kbps 2004-02-13 09:53:07 Speed test @ dslr-west1.megapath.net 510/106 kbps
WOW!
The only minor complaint I could make is that the Usenet service has not been as consistent under Roadrunner as it was with Speakeasy (which uses Giganews to supply its Usenet service). Mainly, under Roadrunner some newsgroups I subscribe to have not yet shown any new headers, whereas under my Speakeasy service those same newsgroups showed new headers every day. BUT, I've never considered Usenet to be a vital Internet service for me, so as I wrote at the top of this paragraph, this is definitely a minor complaint for me.
UPDATE (August 31, 2007): My original Motorola Surfboard quit working last year (2006). Replacing it was an easy matter of going to the local Roadrunner office. I was pleasantly surprised that the replacement Surfboard came with replacement cables.
Since then I have had nothing to complain about. Speed and service reliability continue to be very good.
