I didn't ever imagine myself becoming a Road Runner customer. Since there are cheaper DSL alternatives (not to mention cable ISPs Earthlink and Local.net on the same pipe), I figured why go with RR? Well, there's a couple of good reasons.
Here's some quick background: Up until now I was an Earthlink Cable customer. Time Warner supplied the modem, install and billing (just like RR), only it was $3. a month cheaper for essentially the same service. I was a happy customer and never thought I would switch ISPs again. I could have stayed with EL but my 6 month $29.95 promotion just ended and I was shopping. I figured for the premium content (CNN, etc.) and LOCAL billing support (EL is in India now) it was worth the trouble.
One call to Time/Warner got me on Road Runner standard so fast it was practically instant! I even got their 6 month for $29.95 promo rate as a new RR customer, which was really cool. The operator at TW clicked a few keys on her end, my modem rebooted and BAM I was on Road Runner! I am looking forward to the same great level of service and bandwidth I was already getting, now I can actually UNDERSTAND what the support people are saying to me on the phone, without needing to repeat anything!
UPDATE 12/21/04: A few days ago I got upgraded to 5MB DL as part of the T/W nationwide rollout... I don't see a noticeable change in performance, only on speed tests. I must admit that the connection has been solid as a rock the past couple of months! Promo pricing runs out in two months; I expect to keep the connection but may switch back to EL to keep lower rates while downgrading CATV to basic.
UPDATE 6/26/05: I'm still a Road Runner subscriber, despite the lure of paying a buck or two less with a reseller; I won't go back to Earthlink, and since there's so little known about local.net I don't feel it worth just a buck a month in savings. Connection is still extremely reliable with almost no downtime; Vonage still works great too. My promotion ended and I am paying $45 a month for RR, though I did manage to lower my CATV bill by finding an unadvertised tier which still offers digital channels and saves me about $14 a month.
UPDATE 1/11/06: The DSLR bot is nagging me to update my ISP, but in all honesty nothing has really changed. Reliability has been stellar since the last update with no noticeable downtime, though there have been occasional QOS issues with Vonage which may be packet loss related (short lived occurences at that). Mail works great, no signal issues to report and billing is consistent. A smooth ride continues, but a little more upload speed would be welcome.
