Time Warner inherited quite a horrid situation from Comcast who sold/traded our local cable system to them. Comcast here was as bad as a provider could get; horrid speeds, high latency, unreliable connection, bad customer service and tech support, billing problems, anti-consumer practices, you name it; it was a problem for Comcast. After giving them months to correct the many problems I finally cancelled Comcast but continued to hear from my neighbors that service just continued downhill after I left.
Thankfully about 6 months ago TWC and Comcast had a deal where TWC took over Comcast's SoCal franchises. It was a blessing. Over the last 6 months TWC has made tremendous strides in improving every aspect of the service.
Pre-Sales (5): The TWC site gave a list of what HSI plans were available, the speeds for each tier their features. Additionally they showed that discounts I qualified for based on the promos I signed up for or what other TWC services I had. This was a pleasant surprise given that TWC just got the cable system from Comcast a few months earlier.
Install Co-ordination (2): This is a bit of a PITA. I signed up online and selected an appointment only to be told 3 days later in an email that my Saturday app't wasn't available and they arbitrarily moved it to the following Wednesday morning. This forced a call and 30 minutes on hold to schedule it for the following Saturday since I can't just take off work with a few days notice. IMO, there is no point in taking online appointments if they're just going to change them. Lame but whatever. Because of bad experiences with poor workmanship with Comcast I pulled the RG6QS and install wallplates myself so it was done the way I wanted. With that the installer needed only to light me up at the street and put the modem on my desk. This literally took all of 5 minutes. But then the installer just bailed, without any instructions or paperwork about what my username was. This resulted in a tech support call to get the info.
Connection Reliability (5): The service doesn't go down. Quite a change from the former Comcast administration.
Tech Support (3): Chat support bad, phone support good. Chat support is pointless. Even something as simple as obtaining a username is beyond their capability. As mentioned earlier my installer left without without giving me my RR username (without which I couldn't set up my online account, access the TWC portal or anything). Online chat support told me to go to an https address and enter my phone number. Great, no problem, except the site didn't accept my phone number so I went back to chat and found out "my email was set to inactive". Uh, okay. I'm then told to call my local office where I waited on hold for 30 minutes to be told that it wasn't set to inactive but my phone number won't show up on that site until my work order is closed out at the end of the day. Thankfully the nice lady told me where to find it in the jumble of text on my work order receipt and that the installer was supposed to have told me that before he left. Oh well. Problem fixed.
Services (4): The only negs are no static IP options for their residential plans and their usenet is throttled. For the static IPs it's not that I serve but I like to use remote desktops via VPN and it's easier to do with a static IP. It's not too bad though as my RR IP has yet to change. Usenet is unlimited use unlike Comcast and Time Warner's completion and retention is pretty darn good. The only problem is they throttle the connection to below 3Mb. But then again, they have it, it's free, it's unlimited use and still 3Mb isn't too bad. Overall I'm still very pleased.
Value (5): The service is very reliable. On top of that it's over $20/mo cheaper and way faster than Comcast was. AND NO NASTYGRAMS! I have RR Extreme 8000/768 and typically get around 9700/950. Very cool.
Overall I would recommend TWC in my service area, especially since Verizon FiOS users are having problems here. Prices and service are hugely improved over former operator Comcast. I'm almost tempted to try out their CATV service (with very nice intro pricing) but don't want to push my luck.
