I had Adelphia, and liked their service. They gave me $5 off per month for owning my own modem, and all calls, whether for support or billing, were resolved efficiently and courteously. Since being bought out by Time Warner/Road Runner, I have had a few outages, and a few billing problems. Calling in can be a total nightmare. The person you get in contact with with either not want to help or not be able to help. If by some odd quirk of fate you do get to speak with someone with some customer service experience and proficiency, it's guaranteed that they won't have the means to help you, and they will transfer you to someone less helpful.
As soon as BellSouth offers dry line or "naked" DSL in my area, I'm history.
