Update: 4/5/2003
I've had OOL for 3 years now... My speeds are 8000/950 using a Toshiba PCX1100U modem. Connection is solid, and I have no problems with connectivity. I have had a bunch of DNS issues, and I no longer use OOL's DNS servers... they are slow to update, and I have had issues with them resolving different addresses. YMMV.
The News server is lousy, mainly because of storage capacity (IMHO) and the mail servers are very flaky. Since I leave my email client running 24/7, I see the frequent mail server hiccups that other users may not encounter.
Well... with CV's very aggressive pricing increases over the past 7 months, the total value has gone down. The speeds are still great, but tech support is atrocious... (they only have one script... reboot modem, wait a few minutes... if that fails, reinstall Windows... But that doesn't help me, because I only run Mac OS X and FreeBSD...)
If you have OOL, have no need to call tech support, don't use the news server and only open your email client occasionally to read mail, you are golden... Otherwise, you may have some problems.
Update 4/10/2004
A year later, and nothing much has changed. Tech support is still only Windows oriented, but thankfully I haven't had any serious connectivity problems that required any help.
Speed are still outstanding, DNS servers still suck (YMMV) and the mail server has actually given me less grief. The news server still sucks, but I'm not a USENET junkie, so it doesn't affect me at all.
Prices are still the same, speed is the same and some of the previous issues have actually been corrected...
Update: 10/13/2004
No serious changes. DNS is still a pain in the ass for me. The DHCP-assigned DNS servers are flaky, and can go from working beautifully, to having ridiculously high latency. I've been using static DNS servers (also OOL) and getting much more consistent results.
Otherwise, still the same service. I just wish the price would come down, or DSL would become available for more people in town so that competition would exist.
Update: 9/3/2007
DNS issues no longer exist for me. I use Open DNS rather than OOL's DNS servers with great success... I now have Boost, with exceptional speeds and no latency issues. On the whole, I'm pretty satisfied with OOL... I'm not motivated to move to Verizon's Fios, even though it is now available in my area...

| OOL + OV

One of the things that I like the most is,, at least Cablevision trys or makes the attempt to correct things,or even make efforts in getting services to work.. Other than the video pkg that I should choose,, either way, when I have an IO pkg with my services including OOL+OV ,,, my phone and internet is only $29.95 each,,, even if it's in a promo or not (after $20.00 -rewards program) and I am paying NO Taxes or surcharges as the other companies,, it's simple and it works.... | |
