Found out that my DSL providers was going out of business. Had no problems with them. Had to make a decision on what to do.....
Called Cablevision on a Thursday. Ordered cable (Family Basic) and Optimum Online. Waited on hold about 3 minutes to get to the Rep. to place the order.
Installer showed up at the very end of the install time window that I was given. He had to run connection to the pole on the street as this house never had cable before. Took him about 20 minutes to get the cable run to the house.
Explained to the installer that all he had to do was to get the connection into the basement of the house as we had renovated and had coax cable pulled to all the rooms. The cable terminated in the basement in a Leviton box.
Once we were connected the installer came up to make sure the TV was getting a good picture. All was fine. He saw that I had a wireless access point in my living room and commented on the in house network. He handed me the Motorola Cable modem and said that I should be able to install it with no problem.
Connected up the cable modem and had to do some hunting to figure out how to get my e-mail set-up. Finally had to call tier 2 tech support to register the MAC address of the Cable Modem. Then had to wait 1 hour for the information to populate in their system. Called back tier 3 tech support and finished getting my e-mail address all set-up. This whole process took about an hour and a half.
So far VERY happy with the performance and operation.
Update - 07/16/03 - Well it has been 6 months since I signed up for the service. I have had no issues with speed (it has been great) or outages. I don't really use the e-mail or news servers.
My biggest problem is with billing. When I signed up in December of 2002 I got the first 3 month for $19.95 and then the price was to switch to $39.95 (a $10.00 discount because I have the Family Cable service). I expected this to be a 12 month contract - 3 months at $19.95 and 9 months @ $39.95. Well I got my latest bill and I am now paying $44.95. I called customer service to see what the deal was and was basically told there was a price increase, too bad. I like the service but there is no longer any great deal from having Family Cable. May look at paying $49.95 and moving to satellite.
I agree that the speed is some of the best in the industry but feel that it does not demand the premium price.
Update - 01/21/04 - No real issues. No down time that I am aware of. Mail seems to be OK, although I use another e-mail address for most items. Was VERY un-happy to see my cable rate going up next month. May look to drop cable package to basic. Even with the change in OOL price I will still be saving $$$$. Speeds are great.....
Update - 09-22-04 - Still no real issues. A little pricey but two of us use it for VPN connectivity to our offices. I had one outage that i know of over the summer. It was late in the evening and was back up by the time I needed it the next morning. Still pretty happy.....
Update - 06-27-05 - Decided to give VoIP from Cablevision a try. Called on 06/17/05 to have my second phone line ported from Verizon to Cablevision. Because I wanted to port my phone number I could not do a self installation. Service Rep. made an appointment for 06/26/05 for installation (yes, a Sunday). Technician showed up at 8:30 am (I was told he would be there between 8 and 11 am). Tech checked the signal and replaced a spliter. Replaced my old cable modem (Surfboard 4200) with the new one (tech took my old modem so that I did not have to return it to the walk-in center) and we performed the online update. The phone was up an running. Also as part of the package (to get the lower price) I had to give in and get a set top box for digital cable. This install was also performed by the tech and there were no issues. The tech was there a total of 1 hour. I will see how the VoIP goes with the second line. If all is OK it may be time to say good by to my POTS line.
Update - 11/18/05 - Things continue to be fine. Had one issue with loosing dial tone on the VoIP. Reset the cable modem and it came back. Also had an issue with calls ringing and then when you go to answer it there is no one there. I am sure it was not a hang up as the people on the other end called back and said they could hear me but I heard nothing. After a couple of calls I was told there had been an issue in the area. No problems since then. Speeds continue to be very good. Had about 30 minutes of down time one day. Still very happy.
Update - 02/11/06 - Noticed a couple of drops of service during the day this week. Ran the OOL speed test and was getting 2 MB up and 13 MB down. Appears that our area has been upgraded to the new 2/15 tier. Service has been solid with no major slow downs.
Update - 05/13/07 - Service has been solid and speeds consistent. Although FIOS is available I am sticking with Cablevision. I also have Tivo and a move to FIOS would require 2 boxes to be able to record one show and watch another.
Update - 12/22/08 - Service continues to be solid and provides consistant speed. I have lost the Tivo system (power surge). I have also upgraded to HD cable boxes for TV service. Life is good.....
