I have been using Optimum Online for 3 months now. The speed is awesome. Haven't had a problem with them. The only downside to ool is that they cap your upload speed if you upload for more then 12 hours. You go from 100Kb/s to 17Kb/s.However the downloading makes up for it. I get 6800/900.
I used to be capped, but i called them up, the tech support said they wanted to see my computer so through their site they checked out my computer to see if i was running any servers then they uncapped me. They said they will terminate my connection if i continue to use my upload. Which sucks, cause i wasn't uploading in the first place. I didn't upload anything. I have no idea why i was capped.
I run a wireless network. In the beginning my router used to stop working every couple of days. I had to unplug my router and cable modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. But now i don't get that problem anymore. I have 3 computers using the same cable modem without a problem. You can't even feel the difference if all the computers are using the internet.
The best - The speeds The worst - Upload cap
The plan was 19.99 for 3 months and then 44.95 after that. You get what you pay for. But i wish they would do something about the unfair uploading. You transfer one big file to somebody, and you're capped. If you plan on transferring any files to someone don't go for Optimum Online. Once you get capped, you will have to call them up and they say if you get capped again they will terminate your connection.
*update Dec 26* - It seems i have started to get disconnected very often. I get disconnected atleast 4 times a day. Very annoying. I hope they fix this soon, or they will lose a customer.
*update* Another down side to OOL is their mail servers. They go down very often.
Feb 17th - Still getting those disconnects. It's starting to happen more often. Have to unplug router/modem almost every day
March 5th - It seems OOL now has started to throttle users bandwidth. This is an all time low for the company. At a time where verizon fios is just around the corner, this is the worst possible decision on Optimum Onlines part. »Is Ool Throttling connections now? They throttle your connection to 350kB/s after you download for 10 minutes. I'll be switching ISPs as soon as possible.
October 5th - Everything seems to be going smoothly. I can download at 1.1mB/s without a problem. OOL has ended their 20/2Mb beta test, hopefully that'll be available in NJ pretty soon. It's going to be hard to choose between verizon FIOS and OOL 20/2. I think i might settle for FIOS 15mbps just so i can upload without any problems.
May 13th - Got upgraded to 15/2Mbps a few weeks ago. So far it's going good. A little slow during peak times, but i can't complain. I'm no longer a heavy user, so this is good enough for me. I will give the 30Mbps a try (they offer 1 month free) in a few months. I'm saving it for when i have a lot of free time.
Oct 31st 2007 - No more caps. Tried 30/5 for a while, back to 15/2. The company has really worked on the internet service. Highly recommended.

Yes, if you upload a lot constantly, you are considered a heavy user.
You should be fine if you upload at 3kB/s

| Capping? In the OOL forum, People say OOL stopped capping people even on the 15/2 plan.
Why are you saying your still being capped? Or I'm I confused here? -- "I am the worst president in US history, I'm either stupid or dumb most of the time, but people still believe me." George W. Bush | |
