Update
Over the last year Optimum has become proactive at upgrading its capacity. They have added to the number of channels bonded and most users now get the advertised speed all the time. In the past this was not always the case and in my previous review below I said that if you were a high bandwidth user FIOS probably was a better bet. If OOL continues to be proactive in adding capacity they become an excellent alternative.

previous review
A good service but if you are A high BW user FIOS is better
Caveat- I own a small number of Verizon shares mainly for the Dividend, I do not think it effects what I say but whatever

OOL is an excellent service for the average user. If your main concern is having the advertised speed *all* the time, then, if available, FIOS is probably better for you then OOL.

OOL has at least 15,000-30,000 nodes. They are not as proactive as they could be at dealing with node congestion but Docsis 3.0 certainly helps to reduce congestion issues. Many/Most people do not have congestion problems. I suspect the percent of nodes with major congestion is small but may be consistent, especially in certain areas where there is a demographic that tends to have high internet use.

The higher a bandwidth user you are, the more likely you will have a problem since you will be using a lot of the bandwidth available assuming Boost or above. Personally I think that high bandwidth users are probably better off with FIOS. If you can deal with some slowdowns and price has some importance, OOL may give you the high speeds you want but you can not be sure what type of speed you will get unless you get OOL or there are a lot of records for your area in the archives.

Their Wi-Fi nodes are a major advantage as when power went out I was able to connect via a laptop running off my car and the Wi-Fi. I also have used it in other cases when I needed to connect.

All in all I have had OOL for years and I have been happy with the service.
