Update as of 18-JAN-08
Shortly after last post dropped Comcast for internet and haven't looked back. FIOS internet service ROCKS. At that time Verizon had not added TV service in my area.
In mid-April of 2007 I shut down Comcast cable to go with Verizon FIOS TV due to the lack of response to quality issues from Comcast. I have some issues there as well (will update my Verizon review and not diss them in a Comcast review) and may change that service when my 1 year commit is up (I refuse to pay an ETF).
Update as of 08-JUL-05
Service has been fairly reliable with the exception of several lengthy DNS outages :-(. Speed has been as advertised at 4M / 368K. Constant price increases (annually) and a monthly charge for the modem are negative.
Have just switched to Verizon FIOS 15M / 2M service and will be disconnecting Comcast shortly (after I am confident in the Verizon service).
Update as of 13-DEC-03
My opinion has improved since my original reveiw. Currently they have increased the upstream to 256 K and it appears that suddenly my downstream is over 3 Meg. Thewir tiered customer service (and the assumption that the caller is a low grade moron) is still most annoying. They still need to learn the meaning of customer service, but this shouldn't be surprising since they are a cable company (otherwirse known as the 800 pound gorilla).
I still would choose another option if it were available for similar pricing and service, but that is the proice I pay for living "too far" fronm the CO.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
COMCRAP is the only term I can use to describe their current service. When I first signed up they were part of @HOME and conncections were 2000/800 (up/down in KB). Now that I am on their "New High Speed Network" I am lucky to get 300/85 :-( They advertise 50 times faster than a 28.8 modem which should be 1440 up and they don't bother to mention that they have capped the upstream at 128 (something @HOME did not do). Additionally, their mail servers have been spotty at best (although that appears to be improving). They also promised a web based application for remote mail access, but according to their support group, it is not available and they don't have a clue when it will be activated. Speaking of support, tech support is a total joke. Sit on hold for 45 minutes and then do all the BS basic checks and get no answer supplied or email them and wait 4 days to be told you need to call tech support.
The bottom line is that IF I had any other option (other than expensive satellite) available, I would jump at it. !!! PROVIDE WHAT YOU CLAIM !!!
UPDATE on 11-APR-2002 (to answer questions about "whining")
There are other uses for upstream bandwidth besides running a server. Has anyone heard of a VPN or telecommuting? These are personal uses and the upstream cap at 128 k makes them painful to use. Also, Comcast's sight says you can video conference on the line. Ever seen streaming video at 128 k (it's not pretty).
Also, on their site they list NO OTHER LEVELS OF SERVICE other than the basic. If someone can point me to the services mentioned please do.
I stand on my opinion that at present the service is COMCRAP!!
UPDATE on 12-APR-2002
Ran a line quality test and first hop ping looks good, BUT both the UUNET (east coast) and the west coast tests had losses causing a fail on both - see link below. And before anyone asks, I have run TWEAK (well before this initial review) and adjusted RWIN (the only suggestion from the TWEAK utility).

Interesting developement is that since I posted this review and ADDOUTLET responded (first "comment" below), the line speed has improved to a point where I now am getting an average of 700/110. I guess maybe he does work for Comcast and reported the findings - something that I have had no success doing. I'll reserve futher comment until I see if this improvement holds.
