I ordered the self install kit in mid October when it was still @home. I had little trouble with the install, I was up the same day the kit landed on my porch. Speeds were just under 3000 down 128 up. Everything was great until the transition, when I was one of the DC area people to be down for days. After network and provisioning issues were addressed in Comcast's system, and I had spent 8 hours on hold over 4 days they find my modem has an issue because it won't pick up an ip, and you can't just go exchange it like you can with your cable box. So they tell me they will roll a truck in another 4 days - I've been down over 4 days already- to bring me a new one. The heck with that - I go to Circuit City and buy one that works right out of the box. I have been up since. Down load speeds are now 1050 -1300 most of the time, u/l usually around 115. My pings are under 50ms most of the time, and often under 35. The tech support was very uneven, but then again the transition went kinda rough all around. I did not install the Comcast spyware. At this point it is still the best speed for the money, as I turned out to be too far for a decent DSL connection.
Choices are starting to show up now that it is 2008! Verizon has started sending FIOs letters to my part of the 'hood. While my internet is faster than when I started with @Home and later Comcast - around 5000 down and 784 up, and uptime has been pretty good, the Customer service is still rather cavalier. I tried to get a cable card for my Tivo, which looked to be a self install item, from the information on the website, and after driving to the office they said sorry, you can't. Now it really seems silly to require a truck roll for this, but they do. The last truck roll was to have my drop replaced after a storm and it was done the next day, but the tech arrived at the later part of the 4 hour window. At this point the TV may dictate where my internet goes. My next truck roll could be for FIOs
