I have had Comcast for about 4 years now. I also don't know why it has taken me this long to write a review.
The installation was pretty simple from what I can remember, They ran the wire but I sure as heck was not going to let them install the software. I am a Macintosh user, and the two installers they sent out tried to get their install package to work but they ended up leaving frustrated. It took me all of three minutes to get it working.
Times have changed and so has Comcast. Now, I rarely use their email (I use a web based), I won't use a metered newsgroup service, and my speeds have been capped to half of what I used to get REGULARLY. I have on average maintained 3.25Mb and now I am lucky to see half that (even at 3:00 am). I also don't like the fact that for 3 and 1/2 years I had a nice static IP. Boy was that sweet to set a game up with co-workers. Well I was switched to DHCP, never notified, service stopped working one day.
..Update11/4/2002..
Last Memorial Day - cap was put in place... never notified... seems that I receive a notice at least twice a month about buying their digital cable crap...
Lately I have been starting to lose connection... very intermittently but losing none the less... it has always come back on with no further action from me.
I am just totally disgusted with their customer service and I truly wish that Verizon would deploy the remote terminals... I have no TRUE options for broadband at this point.
...Update 1/14/2003
Connection is getting a little sluggish. Tech support (ha) is suggesting clearing cache and restarting. Told them problem not on my computer. My computer can browse to other computer on MY network and transfer files at 30mbs. Hmmm...
...Update 5/04/2003
Received advertisement in the mail yesterday, seems they want to raise rates again. When is remote terminal DSL going to be deployed?
...Update 5/31/2003 removed "In closing I have to say that overall I have been happy with my experience." from my statement. The above statement is no longer true.
...Update 7/15/2004 it sometimes seems like my router is the target for all of the script kiddies out there. I am constantly being scanned by other Comcast customers. As much as Comcast charges for their service, as many restrictions as they have in place as to how I can use it, the least they can do is to start monitoring their own network. I also love how I receive email intended for other people, how when I try to bring this to the support people, they have no idea what to do but to give me a phone number to call security (a long distance call to boot!). I call security, no one has ever answered, I leave a voice message and no one ever calls back. I am just so tired of the 'give us your money and we don't care about your experience'. I can't wait for Verizon to get up off their butts and get fiber deployed (I can not get DSL)
...Update 4/28/2005 Comcasts DNS server issues. Now I use Verizon's DNS servers. It is so funny that I have to use their main competition's equipment to use the internet at a most basic of level.
...Update 8/30/2005 Comcast is once again solid like a rock, but then again I am using Verizon DNS servers. I am not getting anywhere near the 'upgraded' speeds. I know it MUST be something wrong in my equipment or setup, as Comcast could in no way have any issues. Something else just came to mind: when My son and I are playing World of Warcraft, intermittently we both get the boot, but no one else on our server seems to experience the same issues. I think this is comcast related, but it would be hard to prove.
I sure hope FIOS gets rolled out soon (for no other reason than to get Comcast to get their act together)
...Update 06/26/2006 Uploading large files takes forever.
...Update 02/12/2007 Still stuck with Comcast. Their internet service drops intermittently. I reset the cable modem to get it to start working again. I had Comcast come out to check signal levels. I was told that there was no issue. But for some reason, I need to keep resetting the cable modem. I also noticed the rate increase over the weekend. Nice real nice. Price goes up, I get ZERO in return. Real nice.
...Update 06/05/2007 Cable modem connection will not stay connected. It intermittantly drops while uploading ( 40 or 50 5MB files ).
I am going to stay on analog until I am actually kicked off by Comcast. I will not voluntarily switch. I want them to NOT have the bandwidth. F THEM. I am also going to start being very active in forcing Comcast to offer ala cart.
F THEM. I really really hate them
...Update 12/26/2007 Comcast's HSI will now be considered intermittent at best. No I have not called into their support center. All I will hear is that the problem is not on their end. So why bother. About 2 weeks ago, Verizon started to hang the conduit for FIOS on our telephone poles. Hopefully that means that I can get FIOS in 2008.
Comcast... get your act together if you want to keep the neighborhood I live in. Otherwise I will go door to door and 'sell' the neighbors on FIOS.
..Update 4/16/2008 I finally got FIOS. Good luck Comcast I don't think I will miss you much.
