    UPDATE 2008.11.18
Got a system message asking me to update my Comcast review. Basically, I am still happy with Comcast. I am now paying about $44, I think, and am on the basic tier (6M/256K). Service has been consistently good. No complaints.

    UPDATED 2002.12.30
I've had a couple of outages in the past week or so--both Internet and TV--so I had a tech out this weekend. Didn't find anything--said that everything checked out up to our local node and with strong signals coming into the house at that point it'd be really hard to find the problem unless it showed again.... He did note that one of my TVs had some interference because I was using an old push-on cable, and gave me a new one which eliminated the problem, so it wasn't a total waste.

He did also note that my modem didn't have a home-run connection. I thought it did, because I was running directly from the nearest connection in my house, duh...but there was a splitter at my outside terminal feeding my two inside terminals. He said they'd run a home run line to my modem for only about $40, as long as I didn't have them put it into the wall (e.g., just run a line from my outside terminal across the length of my house through the crawl space and up through the floor), in which case they'd charge more.

I am debating whether to do this or not. I've been getting a very consistent 1200-1400 down/120 up, and I am by no means a power user, so I'm not sure it'd be worth it. Any thoughts?

    END UPDATE

I was a DTVDSL customer. I wasn't planning to immediately change providers, but Friday night my service abruptly cut out. So I needed to do something quick.

I went to one of the local box stores and bought a Toshiba cable modem and one of the self-install kits, all of which will be rebated plus my first month of service.

One little problem here: the box store said Comcast had a first month free promo going on but the tech couldn't find that promo code when she was setting up my account. She noted it and said I should get it, but we'll see when I get my first bill, I guess.

The install was easy. I had to call Comcast twice--once to give them my MAC address, and once to get a username/password into their system (I should have been able to do this in one call, but the first time the tech said the system was unavailable). I got immediate response and no wait both times, and was on the phone for maybe a total of 15 minutes.

Comcast offers two tiers of service: 1500/128 with one (sort of?) static IP for $39.95 and 3500/384 with 5 "persistent" IPs for $95. I ordered the basic package.

Just set up my newsgroup service. Comcast allows up to one 1 GB down and 2 GB up a month, so it might not be the best thing for really heavy newsgroup readers. I dunno. I am not that heavy a user, so it should be fine for me.

So far, I've been consistently getting 800-1400 down and 100-120 up, most of the time on the upper end of this range, so I'd say I'm pleased so far.
