I've had ATT DSL for a few years now. It's been rock solid with only an outage or two the entire time I've had them. The problem? I needed more speed as I work remotely on many servers and the upload speed was limited to 768Kbps. Combine that with PPPoE overhead and the fact that UVerse was rolling out slower than glaciers I needed something faster.
I got a mailer for Comcast HSI + CDV for $60/month for a year. I signed up last week and have been pleased with it so far. CDV sounds better than my POTS line with ATT however it stinks compared to my VoipStreet VoIP trunk. The HSI was the 6Mbps/384Kbps line. That wasn't cutting it so today I upgraded to the 8Mbps/768Kbps tier. Unfortunately by doing this my promo pricing was nullified. For 6 month my cost will be $84/month and then after that around $104/month. It's still cheaper than my ATT POTS line + 1 Static IP address Elite DSL speed. I know with Comcast I won't have a static IP address like I did with ATT, however my address is staying the same so far. With ATT dynamic addressing it was changing every day almost.
Speed seems great with Comcast, I have powerboost kicking in for most uploads and downloads to start with so that definitely helps with file transfer between my home office and my client's machines.
CDV seems okay, I never use the home phone. It will be nice to have unlimited long distance so my wife can use our regular line instead of my office line to call family. For the price it's worth it for e911 over say a VoIP provider. I have the emta plugged into my * PBX and I handle all of the cool features myself.
People might ask why I didn't get the Triple-Play instead. 2 reasons.
1) We get HD via our rooftop antenna for all local channels and I'm not paying for extra channels. There's enough garbage on regular TV.
2) The triple play only includes the lower tier HSI, so I would have had to pay $10/month for the added speed, plus $7/month for HD service. So my price would have been closer to $120/month for the first year and then $160-170/month after that. That's more than I wanted to spend.
I'll update this review as the year goes on. So far I'm pretty happy.
**Update 03/10/09**
I'm really not wild about CDV, having run a PBX in my office the Comcast offering for VoIP is rather sparse. No voicemails as attachments that every other VoIP provider offers, call blocking can only be performed on the phone and not via the webpage? What's up with that?
Internet is fine, I have 16Mbps down and 2Mbps up. I rarely saturate my download speed, maybe only when downloading right from my server in the datacenter 15 miles from me. Anywhere else on the Internet I get maybe half my download speed. It's still faster than DSL and the upload is nice, I can usually get 3-4Mbps upload sustained to my server in the DC which is the most important thing to me.
