Ordered and received Comcast cable internet access about 3 months ago. It came with a Motorola Sb4220 Surfboard modem and a claimed 1800\256 speed.
I live in Bonney lake, Wa. and until a week prior to getting my cable hookup, there wasn't any hi speed internet available, unless it was satellite. I tried to get
satellite from Direct tv about a year ago, and the dealership I called told me that they were having too much trouble with the internet side and wouldn't recommend it. So I waited, and waited, and waited.
Well anyways, on installation day the technician from comcast showed up on time and was very informative and helpful. He was worried that our neighborhood lines had not been dragged yet, so I might not get an acceptable signal. He spent 3 hours at my request and Comcast's dime clearing old cable from our street pole and the side of my house.
The final results were more than I could have hoped, as they met their speed claims and signal quality is top of the line.
I have had to reinstall the setup twice when network cards failed. These were my cards not comcasts and had nothing to do with their equipment quality. I only mention this because reinstalling everything from scratch is a breeze, much easier than a dial-up modem. If you choose to use the usb hookup on the back of the modem and you have XP its pretty much automatic.
I have had dial up modems, dsl(Qwest) and two cable hookups(AT&Tand Comcast) in the past and find this one to be the most satisfying. I had AT&T in Tacoma and it was quite a bit faster but I seemed to get more unusable downloads and system performance was very erratic day to day. I would recommend Comcast in my area to anyone who asked, and have.
update: I have had the service for almost a year now. No complaints, no service neccesary. Download speed just went up to 3.2 mbs and upload is at 265 kps with no increase in price. Reconfigured with drtcp at this point and was successful with the rwin resize to the max reccommended. Still happy.
update 5\28\06: I ended up with 6megs download service and bought the extral 1meg for ten bucks a month. 7 megs definitely spoiled me for anything else.
I got talked into trying a qwest dsl 1500khz account and it was much cheaper but I will be changing back to Comcast next month. The monthly price is 45 bucks compared to 19 for the dsl but this is something you can't budget down and then live with. Now I know.
update 5/1/08
I finally got back to cable...........They hooked me up with their basic no frills package and it clocks at over 10 megs down and 1.5 megs up. The downloads are fast and reliable and I won't be going back to dsl, anytime soon.
I am paying 19.95 a month for six months and then it's back at almost 50.00 a month after that. They did throw in a free self install kit when I picked up my modem at the local office. The Comcast website states that you can only get the low rate for 4 months if you order online and the website wanted 25 bucks for the self install kit.
That was a tad nervy.......25 bucks for three cheap cables, some cable run tie downs and a cd that I didn't need for the install anyways.
I used my own coax, and two top of the line cat cables from the cable modem to a linksys wireless router and on to the PC;.
The CD was useless.........it kept telling me that it couldn't find the network card and excusing itself halfway through the install.
Finally i just configured my pc to accept an assigned IP and DSN. Rebooted my pc, had Comcast register my modem and reboot it.
Done and done...........lol.
Thanks Comcast! If speed kills.........I am a goner already......hehe.
