11/18/2006: I no longer have Comcast. The switchover to TWC/Roadrunner completed a few weeks ago. Between my last post and the switchover, Comcast was damn near rock solid for me save for one five hour outage (late at night) and a dying modem (rock solid since the replacement). I wish I could say the same of Roadrunner. Since the switch I've had a lot of service interruptions, albeit brief. Well, that does it for this review...
03/27/2005: My service is fixed. A tech finally came out, and he was shocked at the condition of my cable. He replaced the drop that had been left unburied since 2000, AND called in to boost signal from the plant. Now it's solid! Thank you, BBB.
03/18/2005: I had a tech visit scheduled yesterday. The technician never showed and when I called to complain about that, the representative on the other end said the tech called twice. Problem is he never did. Not twice, not once, never. And my service is still up and down, but mostly down, and has been for about two weeks now.
I have filed a complaint with the BBB about the lack of service. Maybe that will get Comcast's attention.
03/12/2005: I've been having a lot of trouble with it lately. Connection's been going down regularly for several hours every day for the last week! I'm seriously considering switching to DSL. Maybe my previous bump to my reliability rating was unjustified.
11/08/2004: Haven't had service trouble in quite some time, so I upped the reliability rating.
Another Update: Service trouble again! Last trouble was months ago, but the past couple days have been horrible. Outages, bad connection, and more outages. It's back up right now, who knows for how long. Got a truck roll comin to me in a couple days to try swapping the modem but I think I'll do that myself tomorrow.
Oh yeah, and they had a rate hike, too. Total's now around ~55 bucks or so. TV subscribers get a few bucks off, not enough to make it worth it though.
Added a rating for tech support. Glad Comcast is apparently not outsourcing to India, at least they're doing ONE thing right...
Update: Lately I've been having a lot of service trouble. Outages, inability to reach dns servers, slow speed. It's horribly unreliable now, and has been for the past few weeks.
Perhaps I'm not the best person to review Comcast. I first got cable back when, in my area, it was Excite@Home providing it on AT&T's network. It worked great back then, I had maybe one outage every two months, if that. However I don't think anyone will disagree that since the AT&T takeover, and subsequent Comcast takeover, service has degraded considerably.
But that's neither here nor there and all in the past.
My current experience with comcast is it flat out works for me, and often DOESN'T work for my mom, who's also on Comcast in another part of town. She's always complaining about getting disconnected, meanwhile the only time my modem loses "block sync" is after a power glitch. She's had a lot of trouble with Comcast support giving her the run-around, blaming it on the cable TV guys, and other such. Myself, I've not had to call Comcast support at all. Thus the conclusion I've come to that Comcast is pot luck, at least in the Arlington (TX) area.
I did have issues when my modem was replaced with a newer one, but I honestly can't remember who I was dealing with then, AT&T or Comcast. I didn't get a straight answer as to why the modem was being replaced until I asked the tech who brought it, and after the replacement I had a lot of block sync troubles. When I finally got a tech out here, he took time to introduce me to signal to noise ratios and power ratings, how to check them on my modem and what to do about 'em.
