OK, here's the deal. Bellsouth beat AT&T (now Comcast) to my area in terms of broadband internet deployment. DSL first became available in late 2000, while my area just recently was provisioned for cable in early 2004. Being the geek that I am, I took my first option. Bellsouth continues to provide fairly solid service in my area (there's an RT just 1000' from me), but when I saw that my neighbor was getting speeds of 3 Megabytes/second sustained... I had to at least get my own taste of Comcast HSI.
From order to success, well... let's just say I ordered service on Friday and was up and running on Monday morning, no joke. I'm convinced had I ordered on Monday I'd be set on Wednesday. Note AT&T took **2 weeks** to provision my DSL.
Installation was simple. The tech called me earlier in the day and said he'd be 2 hours earlier if that was alright, I was SO thrilled not to lose 4 hours of my day! He immediately went to work in my condo building's wiring closet, he returned in 10 minutes with the news our cable was pure kung-fu! He then found a vacant coaxial cable line and activated my Motorola Surfboard modem. The tech made sure it connected to one computer, I'd network the connection later. Stunned with the service on the one computer, I integrated Comcast into my home LAN, connecting the Surfboard to my Time Capsule's WAN port and connecting an 8-port Netgear gigabit switch to the Capsule's first LAN port. WOW, instant pain-free config there! It's pretty damn fast cable, and it has much less DNS lag than AT&T did (whether I used outside servers or not). I am loving the speeds I'm getting. My downloads already scream... on certain downloads I'll see a sustained transfer of 3 MEGABYTES per second, and the upload is at least 1 megabyte... especially in the morning. Even during peak hours I average over 11 megabit rates.
Basically, the service is super solid. Hasn't faltered since I plugged it in.
Until AT&T gets their act together and possibly pushes the Broadband speed limits with Uverse in my area, Comcast is broadband. 1 to 3 megabytes per second is what I want in a download, not 500-700KB. Overall, I am a promoter of the service and am telling all my ADSL friends to switch as soon as they can, because ultimately, more speed = more fun = more sense .
