2009-01-03:
Switched to Comcast - getting 12/4 speeds thus far and for only $33 a mth for six months. Will switch to FiOS when available in my town, but so far I am happy with the switch.
2006-11-26:
Verizon DSL Update: Continues to operate well - a couple of outages but nothing of great consequence. However, I anxiously await FIOS.
Comcast Update: Same as Verizon DSL - a few outages but overall it is good - just expensive.
2006-03-11: Order Comcast HSI (6.0/384 plan) for my mom, who is too far away from our CO to get DSL (19,400ft). Went to Circuit City to sign up - Mail-In rebate for modem, but assuming all goes well with that I don't mind. Was up and running less than 1 hour after signup.
Since DSL wasn't an option, Comcast HSI was the only thing available for my mom, who will be pursuing a PhD and needs HSI to access email, research etc...set up a wired/wireless network at her house - so far, its all very stable. Since she isn't a power user, the plan is fine, but would still prefer a better upload than 384kps.
Overall: Unless FIOS rolls into town, or the DSL limit is extended to 21,000ft anytime soon, we'll stick with Comcast HSI.
Monthly Price: $42.05 after 6 mths ($19.99 for six months) Speed: 6.0/384 plan PC: Two laptops - one Win2K SP4, one Win98SE
