I ordered Comcast 4Mbps/384Kbps internet on July 21, 2005. Since I didn't have cable television, they had to send a tech out to do a professional install. On their signup page, I asked for any time within the next week. I got an email that night saying that the earliest install date they had available was August 18, almost a month later. I called back no less than six times, and finally got an install date on August 2.

On the fourth or fifth time I called, Comcast said I was on a deal for three months of service for $19.99(plus the $10.00-ish charge for the tv service I don't use). I told them that the advertisement I had clicked on to sign up said SIX months at that price. They refused to budge, until I guided them to the exact page on their site with the six month offer. Then they corrected my account.

On the install date, the installer did a great job, replacing some cables, and testing the signal quality. Unfortunately, he didn't understand Macs. I told him that that was fine, since I was a networking student in college, and could change my computer's settings. I hooked up the modem (from ebay), changed the settings, and expected to be online. Unfortunately, Comcast's service kept redirecting me to the (completely unneeded) software download page. And even more unfortunately, it wouldn't work in any browser but Internet Explorer, which I had removed from my machine long before.

I called Comcast, and they fixed the problem and I was online(although I suspect they still force-direct everyone to that setup program).

The installation was rocky, yes, but the service has been reliable. If you are content with cable television, the price is fine. But for those of us who have DirecTV, Comcast's requirement to bundle is absurd.

I would recommend sticking with DSL, if you're close enough, or even better, fiber, if you're lucky enough to be in an area where you can get fiber. If you're unlucky enough to not have one of those available, then Comcast is a generally-reliable service, just with high prices.

Update: When I cancelled, they claimed they owned my modem, although I had bought the modem elsewhere. I had heard of them doing such things in the past, so had kept my receipt. They demanded that I drive 60 miles(round trip) to the other edge of a city to show them the receipt. I was not going to waste two gallons of gas to make such a trip, so I called them four times demanding that they acknowledge that I owned my modem, and they finally did.

At this point, I wouldn't recommend Comcast unless you keep the receipt for your modem.

    Inferior high price service

After six (6) years of dealing with substandard inferior service from comcast for internet and cable service, today someone finally discovered the problem. The problem all along has been comcast, very poor tv reception, upload speeds lower than advertised, continual disconntecting from online, and during the whole period Comcast blamed my computer manufacturer which is me, the components in my computer, my house, their splitters, my cable, my tv and the whole time the problem was them...For years of troubles I was given a 3 month 19.99 internet special and a one month credit on my cable bill. Users beware, the service they provide is not worth the bill they send.
