Comcast has been reasonably reliable, except for the entire month where I would lose my connection for at least twelve hours a day. Several routers later, the problem eventually just disappeared.
The biggest gripe I have with them is that I have the more expensive 8mbps/768kbps (versus the slightly cheaper 6mbps/376kbps), but after two years of service here they recently contacted me to say I was using too much bandwidth and would be terminated for an entire year if it happened again.
First of all, when I signed up it said it was "unlimited". Second, my usage during the month they complained about accounted for a single digit percentage of what my account's bandwidth would potentially allow.
Most frustrating of all - and the reason for my anger with this company - is their ambiguous limitations. They say that if I use "too much" bandwidth again, they will terminate me for a year. However, they will not tell me how much is "too much". They will not tell me how much I need to reduce my usage by. They simply say "you are using too much".
I asked them how I am using too much if there is (as the customer rep told me) "no limits". He said the limit is based on whether it is affecting all of the other users on your node. Well, if using a single digit percentage of my bandwidth for a month is significantly affecting the rest of my node, they need to reconsider their poor infrastructure.
So by their explanation, I could use a certain amount of bandwidth this month and it would be fine. But if I use the same amount of bandwidth *next* month and other circumstances on the network changed or the usage of my fellow node-members changed, *I* could be disconnected for a year. For using an amount of bandwidth that was just fine last month and the month before.... so they tell me on the telephone that there is no limitations, but that it depends on your neighbors. Well, what if my neighbors are all busy pirating the latest movies over bit torrent? Or what if they're all on vacation and their computers are turned off? Why should that affect me? Especially since I have no idea what their usage is?
This is all completely frustrating. Just tell me how much is too much or offer me some sort of warning notice early enough that I can be aware of potential problems. I'm not trying to be an over-consumer and I understand that "unlimited" actually means "whatever the hell we feel like", but please just give me some sort of guidelines other than "just don't use too much or we'll kick you off".
I've been a solid customer for seven years. Between my internet and television account, I have probably spent $16,000 with Comcast since 2000. Please treat me like a customer and not like a bum.
