Comcast inherited me from Time-Warner when TW left Houston.

    "GRANDFATHERED"

Talking to sales department about a possible move, discovered that I'm "grandfathered" at my current location because I'm a legacy TWC customer. At first I thought that sounded like maybe I was getting a good deal...but after asking a few questions--which made the sales guy very nervous--I'm paying $30/month MORE than new Comcast customers, AND I'm stuck forever at 6mpbs/1mbps instead of getting 16/2! Apparently the only way to get the faster, cheaper Comcast package is to move...I can't even cancel service and start new service. All part of the deal Comcast made when they bought TWC's Houston operation.

    SUPPORT

First support experience was good: We had an outage after a thunderstorm on a Sunday afternoon. I got through to support quickly (business account), who confirmed the outage, and got 2 follow-up calls on Monday to make sure service was restored.

Second experience was terrible. Power problems burned out the cable modem. Reported immediately. Dropped packets intermittently for 2 weeks and sometimes couldn't get a lock. Finally got to where I was out for hours at a time. All symptoms clearly reported to CC, who said they logged my comments.

I wasn't here when 1st tech arrived (late) and explained to my daughter that all that was needed was to cycle power to my router! Didn't fix it, obviously. Next day, tech arrived (even later) and replaced my cable modem...with a residential model that only supported DHCP. But I need static IPs. Called CC again, they sent another tech (after hours, which was nice) to replace the cable modem with the correct model.

This second experience cost me many billable hours.

    Stuck with the Plan

Of course, you can extract yourself from the TWC legacy account. I've done it many times with a variety of different products and services and providers. Cancel your account ... wait a day or two ... then have your spouse call to sign up for a new account. If they give your spouse a hard time, just tell the Customer Rep that the former account holder (you) was a cousin who has moved away --- and the home address is now in the name of the "new" renter/owner (your spouse). It works every time.

    Re: Stuck with the Plan

I run a computer consulting business on this Internet connection. A day or two without connectivity would be a HUGE problem for my clients and me.

But returning to my original point--a point so obvious that I'd have thought I'd not have to spell it out: A business has to have ENORMOUS arrogance and contempt for their customers to "grandfather" them into bad deals.
