I live in WPB which used to be an Adelphia area, our services have now...more or less become integrated with Comcast. There was no excessive down-time...well none that I can remember or that I have experienced [and I do tend to download alot, so I would remember]. There was no need for me to change or upgrade any piece of equipment, modems or routers, however as employee I did hear that some customers had to get newer modems! I don't work in tech-support so I really don't know the reasons why that was and it never occurred to me to inquire about it since it was not affecting me.
I really have not noticed the difference in speeds, I will test it after I write this review tho. I guess I'm supposed to be getting 6 MB down, as opposed to the 4 MB that was offered by Adelphia.... Visually I have not noticed the difference, and my files still take the same amount of time to download and upload. I do enjoy the free McAfee AV and firewall software I get with having a Comcast email account. There's alot of other good stuff you get, but I could care less, I just wanted the AV and firewall. I was using Avast [free-version] before. They are about the same and if need be [like I have to pay for the McAfee] then I see no prob reverting back to Avast. They are about the same except McAfee has a prettier interface and is more user friendly. I really don't use Comcast mail...I use GMAIL. I think comcast mail is like most webmail services. There's nothing special about it.
I personally didn't have an Adelphia email account to convert to Comcast, to me that seemed annoying so all I had to do was call up tech-sup and get an email account created.
To me the most annoying facet of this whole conversion thing was the price changes. Adelphia offered 3 tiers. -Basic @ 24.95 -4MB @ 42.95 -6MB @ 57.95 You also got options of multiple modems and static IPs.
Comcast offers 2 tiers -6MB @ 42.95 [conditional on if you have CATV svc as well] -8MB @ 57.95 [same] or -6MB @ 57.95 [with out CATV] -8MB @ 67.95 [same] No multiple modem support or static IP, must get router.
That to me personally is kinda sortofa turn off. I feel for that kind of money, there should be some more being offered. As an employee I don't pay much, but I can empathize with the consumer that winds up paying for it. It maybe that I am used to Adelphia prices and Comcast was always like this, however if I were paying consumer prices I would seriously reevaluate which services are truly a necessity.
