When I moved to this remote area I was worried I would only have satellite broadband options. I come to find out that Comcast actually services this area. When I first signed up I had the 6mbit connection and 150ish cable channels for $120 a month for 12 months roughly. I used Vonage as my phone provider as I really dislike Embarq. When the first contract was up I switched to the Triple Play package and it is $129 with more channels and the digital voice, as well as the same speed.

The ordering was quite easy. The install process was as simple as waiting for the tech to find the cable line where it came into the apartment building and watching him connect things a 4 year old could do and run a demo on the cable box. Rather than being a plug-n-play internet setup I had to actually run a program that asked a bunch of questions then the internet was up and running. The downside was it required Internet Explorer 6. I had Windows 2000 and Slackware dual booting on my PC. I prefer Firefox and never updated to IE6 so I was left in a bind.

I cannot remember the brand/model of the first modem but the voip modem is an Arris TM 502G it looks like.

During the first 8 months I had horrible connectivity and constant outages. Some lasting as long as a full 24 hours. When I called to report it I was told the usual "We do have a reported outage but it's only along Censored street." The problem is that the street is the only street that goes through the village where I live, so all of us were without service. But since it is just along one street it was not a priority to Comcast it seemed. Also don't expect an explanation as to why the service is out. I don't understand the logic behind not informing your paying customers, the people who make the business profitable, why they are not getting what they pay for. Even DIRECWAY told me why I had outages while I was with them.

I had moved to a different apartment in the same village and had my service moved with me. It isn't as easy as they make it out to be. Apparently the person who lived here before me had quite an outstanding Comcast bill and never settled it before moving. Even though my equipment has a totally different unique ID and I had been a customer for 11 months they would not turn on the service there until I had to drive to the local office and show them my lease. I loosely use the term local as there is a Comcast office less than 2 miles away but for reasons only known to Comcast and God my service comes out of an office nearly 70 miles away. The nearby one can do absolutely nothing for me, believe me I tried several times. So after spending the afternoon on the interstate just to physically show my lease (they would not accept a fax!) finally they agreed to come install the service at the new location. But it wasn't as simple as changing the address on my account and transferring it. I had to close the previous account and open a new account with a new account number.

The past few months Comcast has been stable and more reliable. I always get my advertised speed (usually quite more actually) and they have increased the upstream speed a little bit.

My previous broadband provider was Sprint (now Embarq) and it was the 5mbps/640kbps plan. I never had one outage in an entire year but the cost of the service was not wallet friendly. If Verizon serviced my area I would most likely be with them but Comcast is here and I tolerate it.
