I am 13,000 feet from the AT&T central office and after a frustrating year dealing with Earthlink, DSL was not a reliable option. I have Comcast basic cable and absolutely despise the number and style of their commercials. Still, when I stumbled across this offer, it was hard to refuse. For 6 months, with no contractual obligation time wish, I pay $19.99 a month which then goes to about $43.00 a month for download speeds up to 12Mbps and uploads of 384Kbps. In addition, I get complete rebates for the modem (exclusive of tax and shipping plus a $125.00 rebate for signing up (30 day minimum). I have had problems getting the right settings to get my Linksys WRT 54G router to work with the Motorola cable modem and kind of got blown off by online "chat" support. It's still an issue to be addressed tomorrow (today?). However, telephone support regarding questions about setup and billing were handled super friendly and professional.
After a few "tweaks", my download speeds appear to be consistently over 15Mbps, which compared to the unpredictable DSL download speeds between 1.0 and 1.5Mbps (on what was "promised to be a 3.0Mbps account) is nirvana. While less of a concern to me, upload speeds have been fairly consistent at 1.5Mbps.
While it's only been really less than a day, Comcast HSI does appear to be quite the bargain and delivers as advertised. I'll try to update my initial impressions about a month or so from now.
