I condidered DSL from several sources, they were either more expensive than Comcast for equivilant speed or didn't offer equivilant speed. If FIOS had been available I would have chosen that; if FIOS becomes available I'll probably switch to it.

I chose the Performance package ($42.95/monthly for 6Mbps with their so-called PowerBoost™ that claims to automatically boost download speed to max 12Mbps for large files - seems to work as they say; large (2+GB) files download faster than they used to). The slowest part of my connection now is my 10/100 router. I borrowed a gigabit router (and the necessary NICs and cables) from a friend and WOW what a difference. I plan on upgrading my network (5 desktops (1 wireless connected) and 2 (wireless connected) laptops very soon. I may even upgrade to the Performance Plus package ($52.95/monthly for 8Mbps ) after that. Since I am of Scotish descent (and you know how we Scots HATE to spend money) I'd like to see this offered at a lower price or with discounts for an annual payment or setting up an automatic monthly payment.

The only difficulty I had with the order process was getting my address in their database - I live in a new development that's not shown on any map yet - it took 4 days for them to update. After that it was really fast; the technician came out and within 2 hours I was on. The whole process from first contact to "lift off" took 6 days.

I didn't use their equipment so I have no idea what they supply. I'm using a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 cable modem and Motorola WR850G router.

So far, I haven't had any bad experiences.

    10/100 Bottleneck?

a gb switch is not going to make sure internet connection any faster.

If you are running a 10/100 switch and you only have 8mbps internet connection, you are not bottlenecked as you still have 92mbps avail on your switch unless you are hard coding the network adapter to 10 mb, whcih if that is the case, GB wont work.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are running a MSFT operating system like 2000, XP vista, you will only get at most 250 mpbs out of that os. So there really is no sense in going to a GB switch, and also no sense doing it if you are running wireless, because the fastest speed for that is only around 100mbps. As you stated you are cheap, so why waster your money buying new GB network cards, new wireless router and new wireless cards to support this when you are not going to notice any difference.
