I've had Comcast in Santa Clara for over two years, and service has been up and down. I made an appointment far in advance that Comcast kept, but the tech was 90 years old and was completely incompetent. He was mystified by my about:blank homepage and had to call their tech support just to set my account up because he couldn't figure out Comcast's own software. It's been two years and I still remember how bad this guy was.
The 8mbit download speed is as good as advertised; I often maintain download speeds around 1MB/sec. Unfortunately the upload is 384k, which is ridiculously low. Connectivity will be good for months then horrible for months with disconnects multiple times a day and downtime for hours during prime time. Tech support is nonexistent - there's nothing they can do about network mismanagement.
The bottom line in the bay area: if you just want fast downloads and don't care about downtime, Comcast is great. If you want to play games without being disconnected every 30 minutes, get DSL. Obviously Comcast is a national ISP, and if you live somewhere else, YMMV.
