I was a longtime RCN (now Astound), customer. I switched because Astound's TV service was highly compressed and the signal was frequently dropped.

I ordered the triple play package at $159.99 (for 12 months) with the 6Mb up/384Kb down internet service. I tried the 8Mb/768Kb service for a month but I never got more throughput than when I had the basic service. I called into support multiple times and was persistent but no one was ever able to help me. I got their standard answers: "Comcast doesn't guarantee any levels of service" "Maybe there are other people online when you are testing your bandwidth." , so I downgraded back. I've still NEVER seen any difference in performance so I am reasonably certain that my service was never actiually changed.

The order process was OK. The salesperson told me I could provide my own cable modem but once the service was installed I was informed that I needed to rent an Arris cable modem for telephone service at $3 a month. This was not disclosed up front and Comcast does not allow users to provide their own modem.

Arris Cable modem supplied for telephone service by Comcast.

D-Link DCM-202 Cable modem for data supplied by me.

2 Motorola digital cable boixes and two Motorola cable cards for HD supplied by Comcast.

Two major issues for me were the absolute inflexibility of Comcast when it comes to customers purchasing their own Arris cable modem and their inability to provide the broadband service upgrade they sell at a premium. On the plus side Comcast's TV service is MUCH better than Astound's, the basic and standard def digital channels are much cleaner and the HD channels are much more stable.
