For kicks I've been monitoring my connection with the crazy-cool smokeping tool here. FOr hours at a time there will be latency increases from avg. 50-100 ms from CA or NY to MI to even 2 sec. with packet loss of 50% for significant periods. Not important (but irksome) for web and p2p; devastating for VOIP and interactive things. When it works, I can do150KB/s down, 45KBs up via uTor, which seems about maxed out, compared to up/down with any other protocol or app. When it doesn't, I lose dial tone, and so forth.

Looking into buying a T1 line. Period.

| Re: just a question. Yeah, it's fast, and works most of the time. Really Comca$tic.
Unfortunately, sporadic extreme latency and packet loss issues make it totally unreliable for my work- which I actually do sometimes
I mean... I've been having my VOIP calls dropped regularly, can't connect to my office smoothly, and the like. I'd be happy to blame Vonage, my office, etc. but what I find when I look is not a Vonage-ish issue.
Given results like these below, I am not looking to invite techs over.
And they now tell me they want to send one, but that they'll charge me if they can't find anything wrong... not very confidence inspiring.
"If the technician onsite determines that the issue is not related to the Comcast High-Speed Internet service or equipment, you may be charged for the service call. "

Still, I keep the smokeping running for my own black humor and to help convince my work to just buy me a damn t1 line (my work is in Chicago, I'm not). | |
