Many years ago I had Comcast, back when it was around a 1 megabit connection. Later I jumped shipped for Verizon DSL, which was cheaper. I've had Verizon DSL for the last 8 years and it has been very reliable and consistent. I was glad when Verizon upped their speeds to 3/768. That speed was very good, but now the days of more video, larger files, and VPN, I needed faster speed. With Comcast upping their speeds to 6/1 and 8/2, which bursts even higher, I figured it was time to jump ship again.
I picked up a modem and new router at Circuit City and began service. My modem was not activated as planned, since I gave Circuit City the wrong phone number, I believe. So I called up Comcast and the rep set me up and got me on a better plan than Circuit City offered. So I have 8/2 for $25 for the next year. So far the speed has been excellent. It does slow down a little in the early evening, but even then it is above my 8/2 provisioned speed. I am getting bursts over 16 down and uploads are consistent at 3 megabits.
I am seeing slightly higher latency with Comcast than DSL. It's about 10ms higher. Anyway, the speed is great. I hope it is reliable as DSL. Time will tell.
Side note, last year I signed up for Comcast and tried it out for a day and I was disappointed. I think the speeds were far slower than they advertised. I now realize that had a lot to do with the very old Docsis 1.0 modem I had. My new Motorola SB5101 is much better and faster

UPDATE: I am on 16/2 service now. Reliability has actually been better than DSL. This is important to me, since I VPN into work two days a week. I am now on a special promotional plan. I am pleasantly surprised how fast and reliable my service has been. Customer service has been great. In the past when I had Verizon, I would be transferred numerous times and sometimes they would transfer me into voice mail or I would get hung up on. With Comcast my calls have been handled by the same person who answers initially.
