In an area where you only have Verizon DSL (1.5mbs max) or Comcast Cable (aside from commercial grade connections) choices are limited. I had Verizon Dry Loop (768k/128k) for $32/mo, its ok for email and browsing but don’t try to download anything big because you might as well be on dial up. Comcast was the only choice for speeds necessary for today’s surfing. I don’t have any other Comcast Residential services (have a business class voice line for the home business but that doesn’t qualify me for a there reduced residential internet rate) so it was either pay 60/mo for residential internet (no contract) or commit 2 years to business class for the same price & speed internet as residential (but with no caps, yet…)

I opted for the residential, didn’t want to commit, 2 years is a long time, who knows what will happen (maybe FIOS . I called and questioned sales several times. The last rep I spoke with was able to get me 6 months at $29.99 then up to $59.99. Figured why not, need the speed for home & business use. I already had a cable modem so I was able to connect with Tech support that day and within 10 minutes they where able to get my modem online (was able to use the line I had active for the business class voice).

So far, so good. Getting great speeds, signed up for the basic plan which is 12/2 in my area. Speed tests have been averaging around 17/4 with powerboost. I was able to download a 2.2gb DVD the other night in around 45mins (would’ve taken 6 hours with my prior connection).

Overall I’m pleased. Not looking forward to the $60/mo bill but it is a necessary evil here (at least for my home computer repair business). I would recommend Comcast to a friend if in the same situation. Still waiting for FIOS though.
