I subscribe to Comcasts Double play service.
I have digital cable in one bedroom, along with HD in the living room (with standard box, no dvr), and a analog tv hooked directly. Plus the internet.
When I came to Naples Florida in January of 2009, the TV service would go in and out and the internet was kinda slow. I called comcast and they sent out a tech to check the house. The tech informed me that he replaced one splitter that had gone bad. Everything seemed to be working ok again. I did notice the modem still had a signal around -12 to -15. It also showed the bit error rate % of around .002. I didn't have any internet issues as far as browsing went, however I was never able to try gaming at this point.
The connection issues just seemed like they were getting worse. The digital cable box eventually wouldn't pick up the signal. The living room's tv would cut in and out all the time (like you would be watching satellite in a bad storm). Plus the internet would also cut out. I checked the signal levels again on the modem and noticed they were above -15 Power Level from -15 to -19. I called comcast and they informed me of a known outage in the area. I told customer service that I still wanted to have a tech come out because of the issues I still was having. The lady claimed she scheduled the appointment but I guess just never did. Nobody showed up. When I called in again on the day of the appointment, they informed me that no appointment was scheduled.
I then took it upon myself to see what the issues were with the cables. When I went to the attic I noticed the setup was split way too many times.
It was like this:
-------- TV ( Digi box) ------- Net
Signal main -------- Tap -------- HD TV Box ---------- tap
--------------------------------- tap
-------- Analog signal tv
How the TV's and the internet was working is beyond me. I decided to rewire the house using a proper setup.... Like so:
------ Internet ---- TV Digital box
Main ---- 2 way split --------- 3 way split ---- TV HD box ( NO DVR)
---- Analog TV Direct Connected
After I rewired to this setup, TV and internet service was great for about a month. Then I started to have the same connection issues. I was able to see signal levels go down around -6 to -8. The digital box from the main bed room was replaced with a new cisco one. It worked for the 1 month time period as well but got to the point where we couldn't have it hooked up. It no longer wanted to receive a signal. The internet has its ups and downs. Some days its fast, other days it is slow. Analog TV signal is very poor in the upper channels as well. The HD receiver for the most part works. At least if your show is only 5 or 10 mins long with lots of breaks in it. These issues happened pretty much any time of the day at random.
I called comcast again, they sent a tech out. Tech came and replaced the splitters I had used. ( I was fine with that b/c the tech had better splitters). Tech also said that there was some loose cable connections in the main box on the outside of the house. He also said that he tightened them up. The Tv's and the internet was once again working. Well at least for that day. The same issues started to happen. The HD box didn't go out as often, but most of the HD channels didn't work properly. The digital cable box had to be unplugged again because it no longer wanted to receive the signal. The cable modem signal levels are still around -6 to -8 however I have noticed that when the connection seems to go crazy the SNR seems to jump around between 25db to 36db. Internet speed tests from comcast servers show the speed around 6 mbps down and 2.5 mbps up.
I have yet to call comcast about my current issues. Starting to get tired with it. There seems to be issues everyday with the signal to the TV or the cable modem. The only other issue I can think of is a congested node. Unless the cable line on the outside has some issue with it. I have no ideas left on what to do.
