I have no choice for HSI other than Comcast in this area. It's either Comcast, or local 56k, or Satellite. When the service works right, it runs great, but in the 6+ years of living here, I seem to have issues every couple months, and its ALWAYS the same thing. Latency problems, connection loss, random rebooting, poor speeds, packet loss issues,to name a few. In the 6+ years having Comcast, we/I have seen at least 25 - 30 different technicians who have had to come do a service call. It's ridiculous. And as usual Comcast always seems to have an excuse. And every time they claim to have resolved the issue, the same issue, or similar issue, will pop up again 2 - 4 months later. It's as if they keep rigging it to work, and hope it keeps working.
Oddly, when i use their newer, DOCSIS 3.0 setup/speed packages, I have ZERO issues, but the second I try to downgrade, to a cheaper package using DOCSIS 2.0, I immediately run into issues. You explain it, I can't. The only thing I can guess, is with the higher speeds/bandwidth, the issues are less noticeable. Not sure. But running DOCSIS 3.0, it runs nearly perfect.
Originally I had an Arias(spelling) modem installed as I had home phone also, but once I dropped the home phone, I went to the 22MB high speed package, which was DOCSIS 3.0, ran great. Prior to this we had Comcast at another house, where it was 3 of us as roommates, and we constantly had issues running the 12MB & 16MB speeds, and I mean constant. I recently now just moved, and figured let's see if I can go back down to the 12MB service, and hope things will run ok, not a chance. I had been using a Surfboard 6120 modem they supplied, DOCSIS 3.0, before and after downgrading, no issues. When I downgraded, for some dumb reason they came and swapped in a Surfboard 5100, and it's been hell since, again. Constant issues, same old crap. They also supplied me with a Netgear WNR3500 Router, works great, no issues. I have repeatedly asked to have a SB6120 modem put back in since it worked great with it before, and all I get are excuses as to why they can't, or they tell me to go buy one.
I have never had an issue with the install process technicians do, always been typically fine. But, be sure you keep an eye on their technicians. I recently had a tech I never seen before, take it upon himself to install the Comcast Security Suite on my system OVER my Kaspersky. To say I am pissed is an understatement. I now cannot seem to get the entire Comcast Suite fully uninstalled. I literally have had to go through my registry and remove the files myself, just to get rid of 95% of it. As we speak, I still can't seem to get rid of the Comcast Antispyware. It has dug in somewhere in the registry, and I can't find it. After doing some research, I have found out the Comcast Suite, is an infestation, and a pain to get rid of. So, I'll just leave it at that, as I have a BBB & FCC complaint currently open against Comcast, both for the recurring HSI issues, again, and for the software the tech took upon himself to install, without asking or saying a word.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend Comcast to ANYONE in this area. Sadly, they have monopolized this area, and there is no other choice.
