Moved out of the school dorms into a duplex and immediately ordered cable internet. Got 768/128 for $43.95 + 4.95 (modem rental). No contract term is a plus since I'm only going to be here for 3 months till school ends and I go home. Tech gave me a Surfbord 4100. Lucky me, SNMP is unlocked so I have full access to my modem.
Downside is that signal levels are ~2 units away from their max/acceptable limits which means I cannot use a splitter and watch TV on my computer anymore I asked the install tech about putting one on and he refused (for good reason because I tried and the modem doesn't work anymore!)
Update 2008-06-12: It's been several years I've had Charter. For the majority of the time, the speeds have still been reliable and uptime has been good. Rarely, cable channels go out (due to snow) or they decide to to do network maintenance late at night -- when I'm still using the Internet. Prices just aren't competitive with larger cities which use Comcast, etc though.
Update 2009-01-12: I haven't lived in Oregon for 6 months and no longer user Charter. When I left, I had 3Mbit/1Mbit, I believe which was sub-par compared to other cable providers in the USA. Was paying something like $50/mo for it too. Glad I'm back on Comcast with much better speed vs cost ratio.
