I have the fastest package available with 3000 down and 256 up and I never get near the advertised speeds when tested. My top monitor was 2434 down. Not what I pay for and that speed is a true rarity. We've had horrible disconnects in my area and when I call in they claim it's my computer or me blah blah blah. They send techs out, no problem here. It's the lines, a part, maintenance, wild monkeys ate thru the line, venus isn't in line with Pluto, any excuse but it's our fault unless you speak to a supervisor and they have always been very nice to me and even offering substantial credits to my account. Just getting sick of it. I had Charter in Reno before I moved to Washington and rarely ever had a problem there. The modem they provided for a monthly rental fee was a piece of junk. I bought a Linksys modem and router and love it. Save your money and buy your own equipment. It's cheaper and more reliable. When it is running smooth, which is rare, it's very fast. Cable internet is the way to go if you're hungry for speed. Charter needs to check out why Washington has such horrific problems and fix it. I'm not the only one with complaints if you look anywhere on the Net about Charter, so I'm not just complaining. If you have a choice for cable internet service providers, I'd suggest to try the others first and steer clear of Charter.

I really have to say that I'm shocked. Today is 1-21-05 and Charter has really improved service here a lot. It's down very rarely and most of my speeds have stayed in the mid 2500 for dl or so. Here is my last 5.

I've been pretty happy with the improved service over the last 6 months or so and am very happy Charter took care of whatever issues seemed to be affecting the local cable speeds.

Update: I have moved from Washington to Reno Nevada and Charter is just plain pathetic. I have had 7 weeks of connection problems and have had several techs out to fix the problems and they have no ideas why my speeds are so erratic. Not only am I hearing more completely totally rude customer service reps but they have very limited knowledge regarding trouble shooting. Charter is at an all time low and keeps going downhill. I will call again tomorrow to complain as I do every day. With Charter it's a lifestyle to be unhappy. If you're reading this hoping to get good sevice thru Charter then take my advice and surf the internet with a red wagon. It's more reliable and faster.

8-19-05 Looks like Charter finally has resolved my connection issues. I just hope it lasts. For my 9 weeks of troubles I did get a 1 month credit of $39.99 plus 2 $20 credits for missed and late appointments. They installed a new amp and reinstalled all the outlets in my home and speeds have been back where they should be. It's a shame after so many techs came to me for hours on end over the 2 month period and never found the problem yet 1 tech came out and had it resolved in less than an hour. He was not an advanced tech as they couldn't figure the problem out. Over the past few days my speeds have remained steady. I have ammended my review and hope that the customer service reps at Charter improve their service. Many of them are very nice and knowledgable but many are just out right rude and obviously have very little knowledge regarding troubleshooting servicing.

    11-17-05 UPDATE:

I am totally shocked. Nothing but awesome connection and speeds for months now. Never misses a beat. Never any down or even slow clock speeds. I hope I'm not speaking too soon but Charter has provided excellent cable television and high speed internet speeds for months now. My only wish is that Charter increases the Upload speeds to at least 512. Good job Charter. Keep doing what your doing. Way better

    4-30-06 UPDATE:

Rock solid speeds. After Charter rewired my apartment. My speeds are just perfect. I haven't had my service go out or slow down in months. Had to reinstall a new HDD and had an issue setting up email configurations. Called Charter and had me up and running in minutes. Very pleased!

    7-1-07

Rock solid still. 1 brief outage in a year and a half. Reliability has just been incredible. Can't believe I'm still saying this about Charter. I am now running my upgrade to 5000/512 and have been very pleased. Running 2 computers gaming with an XBOX 360 on Live and not a hint of lag. After all my issues with Charter I'm happy to say they really got their act together.

Been happy with speeds especially since I upgraded to 10mbps package. The customer service is at an all time low. I made at least 6 calls yesterday at the 1-800-get-charter line before I got someone that spoke barely understandable english. Charter has accepted new lows in hiring foreign reps that has such heavy foreign dialects that understanding them is near impossible and what's worse is they simply can't understand too. When I got angry at one rep he advised me that"I'm sorry but some sort of my english not goodly sometimes'"

Bought a plasma tv as well and got the MOXI DVR and I can say Charter better step up and get more HD channels going soon. Dish network and DirecTV are much better deals and provide more HD channels. Charter is losing the war there. The only reason I stay is not wanting to be over charged yet more on my internet connection. Just warning that if you are going to change to Charter be ready for horrid foreign support from reps that have no clue what services are provided or probably have TVs in Mexico and India.

    1-10-08

Speeds have been steady and great. Also got Charter telephone and the install and service has been very good. I'm saving about $30 a month using Charter phone service with the bundle over AT&T and am quite happy. No outages lately to report. Charter has really turned it around for me but again, when you have to call support, the foreign outsourcing reps are just horrid. They are clearly Indian and have very strong dialects and are absolutely clueless regarding services and their English is horrid! CHARTER, STOP OUTSOURCING! THESE FOREIGN OUTSOURCE REPS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

    6-20-08

Been pretty solid. 2 outages in the last year or so that I can remember. Monthly rates went up by $11 for my package and if it happens again it simply wouldn't be cost efficient for me to stay with Charter. Love my MOXI and High Definition channels on my plasma television. Charter is lacking more channels than other providers and NBC goes into a poor viewing state every now and then. My only gripe about my MOXI recorder is the menu, hate it. Charter telephone has been great and I have no complaints about it whatsoever.

    9-5-08

Speeds are basically solid but I did have to have Charter come out due to inconsistant speed issues. The techs need to be more careful around my house and when they leave cables or garbage on my floor, they need to clean it up. As before, if you get a rep from Mexico City, hang up, they are incredibly rude and have absolutely no knowledge of Charter products and their English is extremely poor.

    charter

you know people tend to complain more than they like to give a compliant. as far as charter yes they have major issues csr are the major part of the bad name charter gets. the techs are pretty good they lack tools and equiptment to trouble shoot but that is charters fault not the techs fault. what i don't understand is how people complain about issues that are beyond charters control for example... if your house is not newer than 10 years old chances are your house has rg-59 cable and with newer offers such as dvr hd tv cable modems you need rg-6 cable in your house. now charter did not wire your house your builder did and he is going to get the cheapest wire to cut his cost all splitters and cable wiring from radio shack best buy people purchase and put in there homes is not the best material to use. charter is not responsable for your wiring in your home that is your property. as technogly changes so does the need to update your wiring. charter provides a service to your house and after it gets to your house the wiring should be replace at your cost if its not up to date and understand you cannot always replace what is in your home due to the wiring being ran before your house was finished walls ceilings etc.
charter for the most part will run all those wires and not charge you and they offer inside wire maintence to cover the cost so your not paying an hourly rate. if you set a service call charter does not have a truck roll fee to show up at your door like other phone or satelitte companys do. as far as people saying charter modems are junk they have same modem you can walk in and buy your best buy or circuit city they many brands they issue just like the store do. i am not here to knock on any of you but i think before we all rip on charter services you should see what a service charge would be for a repair tech for at&t would charge to knock on your door before he even works on your problem. that is the biggest reason charter is going broke and never has a profit they would rather give you free labor and materials. gas prices cable and phone wire are not cheap not to mention paying a employee an hourly rate to be at your house to replace bad wiring

    Re: charter

As a former employee, I'd tend to agree. The party line was that we did pretty much everything we could to assure one call resolution.

I had customer's three wayed with Dell and Microsoft at times and 99% of the time, we were able to take Dell and MS to task over issues they caused and did not want to own up to and just blamed on the ISP.

However over the past year, Charter has made some deplorable decisions, especially in regards to their Sales and Service initiative, which seeks more to sell you something than to fix your problem.

Charter has lost 70-150 techs (people like myself that could actually walk you through the router you bought better than the company that made it) because of this initiative and because our techs did not want to risk screwing the customers over to make a buck. These people walked rather than be forced to screw over a customer.

That said, Charter has been scrambling and still is to the point of hiring mostly temps (from the info I have, spartan that it may be now) to fill the seats and they mostly come from sales backgrounds. Most of the remaining few technicians worth a salt are disgusted at what they've been relegated to.

In the call centers, we have the equipment (or did), we had the tools, but the company was too busy changing things, that they changed things that worked into things that didn't and kept alot of the bad stuff. The problem guys, its not in the people helping you on the phone. Its in the links on the network, its in the kma's out in the field (they don't answer to a heirarchy you know, they're independent mostly still). The problem, I hate to say, is literally in your area's in your towns.

If you really want to make a difference, stop in to city council and have them make an inquiry of the local charter office, make sure that the field installers are all certified and management is up to snuff.

There's a lot of good field installers, but it only takes one screwy one to mess up an image.

    30 Things about Charter

30 Things about Charter in St Louis

1)I used to work in billing, now I don’t. So I want to get a few things off my chest. 2) St Louis is the sixth poorest city in the US, of course nothing works. The infrastructure sucks. 3) Charter is 20 BILLION dollars in debt, they can’t afford to fix it. 4) If a tech has come more than 4 times in 3 months for the same problem it’s best to downgrade or switch to another service provider. 5) The agents can’t tell you this. You have to connect the dots. 6) A zip code is a five digit number used for mail delivery. An area code is a three digit telephone code. Learn the difference and stop giving your zip code and phone number to agents on the phone. How are stupid are you? 7) Don’t jump into the problem and start rattling off balances and payment. We haven’t even brought up your account. Just say “I have a question about my bill?” 8) Keep your bills on file. Have your bill in front of you when you dispute the balance. 9) Charter is 24/7 so don’t call us for a complicated explanation of your bill while you are driving, while you are drunk, while you are taking a dump, or pretty much any time you are distracted. 10) Don’t put us on hold cause you need to take a call on the other line. In the olden days we use to have one phone conversation at a time and the world did not come to an end. 11) Yelling and swearing does not fix your problem nor does it get you a supervisor faster. 12) The time slots for appointments are 8am-noon, 1-5pm or all day (anytime 8am-8pm). Some areas have no weekend appointments. We know this. Don’t shoot the messenger. 13) A supervisor has the same access to the appointments as an agent. 14) We write shit about you on your account. 15) Pay your f***ing bill. 16) If you are disconnected for non payment, you are not in a position to negotiate your reconnection. 17) If you cannot pay your bill in full each month, you have too many services. 18) FDR is spinning in his grave knowing that social security checks are used to pay for your HBO. 19) I have a fixed income too, it’s the 20K I make a year. 20) The moxi is a piece of sh*t and you are better off getting a TiVo. 21) We are friendly, but not your friends. Don’t tell us your problems We don’t care. 22) Talking is bad. Telling a story is bad. Interrupting is bad. Asking a question and then trying to answer the question or asking another question before we can answer the first question is rude, annoying and frustrating. Shut the f**k up. Let us talk. 23) Not every call is recorded. 24) The lady in St Louis who called me a motherf**ker over and over again on May 12th for the last time, the Charter and the government are NOT tapping your phone. 25) Your calls would not be so long if we did have to repeat the same information 5-6 times. 26) What the hell is so complicated about this statement “Unplug the cable box from the electrical plug for about ten seconds and then plug it back in?” 27) “Is the TV on channel 3?” is a yes or no question. Do NOT TELL ME A STORY ABOUT THE BOX. JUST SAY YES OR NO. 28) Anyone over the age of 70 should not have digital cable. 29) Your teenage son DID order $200 worth of porn and he lied about it. And you have to pay. Here’s an idea. Try punishing him. 30) The outsourced worker is not going to quit their job cause you think outsourcing is taking away jobs from hard working Americans.
