Charter's reliability and speeds have greatly improved in my area for the past few years, but more recently I am encountering connection issues again. Prior to three years ago they were horrible. I still believe they are too expensive and strongly resent having to call their office to barter for a good price every time my contract expires. I assume this is done for those who aren't aware of the option, they will ultimately pay up to twice as much as those complaining about their bill. That being said their service had been excellent until the past several months. The same tech has been here three times, always claiming to find the problem, and leaving only to have the same connection issues repeated. Speeds are what I pay for(10Meg). If you are one to need tech. support often you may want to consider other options. While they have some good telephone support technicians most are horrible and will quickly dismiss your problem as the fault of your pc or modem manufacturer.
The last time I contacted Charter regarding my mothers bill, I informed them I purchased her modem 3 years ago and they have been billing her a modem lease which was recently brought to my attention. They asked me to fax them a copy of the sales receipt! - I laughed and declined with some choice words. Immediately calling back and speaking to someone else she informed me they had on record that she owned her own modem, however can only reimburse her for the previous nine months in lieu of admitting they had billed her modem rental for three years.
I recommend signing up during a good promotion to lock in a low rate, preferably for 12 months or longer. At the end of that contract be prepared to contact them for another promotion or willing to pay out the rear for the service.
