I made the switch back to Charter about a month and a half ago after being away from them for several years. I was assured by the sales rep, all the outage problems that used to be in my area are a thing of the past. For almost a month exactly, I was pretty impressed. I had a few hiccups (more than with DSL), but nothing too annoying or long term.

8 days ago, my internet dropped at about 9a.m. It did not come back up until 11:50p.m. This has happened every day since. There will be anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour every 4-5 hours where the connection will come back up. But, for the most part, it is completely dead from about 8:45a.m. until 10-11p.m. Just as it was the last time I had Charter, there is no explanation of the problem. All I can get is the generic "there is an outage in your area with no ETA" speech. There is no one that knows squat at the "support" center about the problem. I would atleast feel a little better if someone could explain what the problem is.

I have absolutely no use for a landline, but unfortunately it looks like I will have to switch back to DSL and pay $75/month for DSL if I have any desire to use the internet. Charter in my area is still completely useless. My cell phone has transferred 6 times more data through it (EDGE network) in the past week+ than my cable modem. I guess in the long run, DSL won't be much more since I have to pay my cell company for data usage when my cable is out.

    Update: Down again! surprise surprise.

Waiting on Naked DSL and AT&T buyout to complete.

Update 12/19/06: All has actually been well lately, aside from scattered lost locks and pop3 timeouts. It took 9 years, but maybe the cable infrastructure in this neighborhood is getting better. I would still never dream of using them for TV though (price way too high, terrible analog picture compared to DBS offerings, incompetent digital boxes that are quick to overheat and "pixelate", ridiculous DVR charges).

2/10/09: I haven't updated in a while, which is a good thing! I am guilty of squawking when all is bad, but being hush hush when all is smooth. The price is kinda high at $60 for just internet, but all has been smooth as of late. Naked DSL has been available to me for a while, and I am admittedly thinking of switching back just from a price standpoint. The loss of speed I would encounter switching to DSL is keeping me here right now though. One more price hike may do me in though.
