I am a Charter BBT2 and I see hundreds of systems each month. providers for DSL, wireless internet, satellite internet and each of the customers always seem to come back to cable broadband If they ever leave it. in some cases, we do cost more, but with Charter, at least in this town, when you need a tech at your door, you get a tech at your door. 24 hours or less, most of the time, same day! I have yet to see ANY other ISP give service like that. the phone company here takes 2 weeks and maybe they make it, maybe they don't. satellite charges you 99.95 to come to your house and then tell you it's your fault. even if their equipment melts. Thanks, but i'll stick with cable broadband

Klamath Falls might be good but Medford/ Central Point sucks

During the day your lucky to 500 kb down usually my upload is faster then the download.
After 11:00 pm it gets better but I work at 6:30 am not much of an option someone should get tech support to listen.
I have several friends and neighbors that have the same problem.I switched from Charter to Qwest DSL for a year and before I switched Charter was much better. Now Qwest is looking better again.
I am supposed to be getting 5MB download speed not even close.
My highest since 4/4/07 is 724Kbps down.

We were told this morning at our weekly meeting that the new fiber would be lit up within 5 days from now. they tested it over the weekend but found that Quest had a minor issue (a card wasn't capable of running the OC45 line) they should have it and installed by monday, but i am guessing maybe tuesday of next week just to be safe.

Re: Klamath Falls might be good but Medford/ Central Point sucks

    Thanks for the update.
Are you saying that we might actually get some of our speed back up closer to where it should be ??
That would be great I have no problem with Charter I just want to be able to use the internet without feeling like I am still on dialup.
I have been with Charter (except one year with Qwest) since they took over @Home and with them since it was available here in Central Point.
I did have some problems a few years ago that they could not isolate (it took about 8 months) until a tech was actually at my house when the problem was happening.
Kind of like taking your car to the mechanic it never would do the same thing when they were here.
They actually credited me 5 months of service once they found the problem.(Central Point was way overloaded for the one headend I think it was)
Anyway Thanks I hope it gets better or I will be calling Tech support and complaining again.

I will try to get a good one either late tonight or early tomorrow morning

    @charter.com

I started having similar problems a week ago. We had been on the Charter 3mb service, which every evening dropped to about 700k. I called Charter, they had me remove the router and run tests, sure enough ~3meg. (Incidentally it took that phone call to upgrade me to the 5 meg, that was supposed to happen "automatically"). Since then, I get ~5meg but only with just the modem in the loop. Anything I add--router or even just a hub or splitter--brings the speed back down to 1mb. I have tried different routers, swapped out all cabling, etc., to no help. Any ideas?

I am not a tech or anything I do have alot of experience with computers and routers. The router should not affect anything as far as I know at least with my experience.
    Where are you located ??
The problem I am having is to much traffic in this area.(Medford,Or) the speed drops drastically during the day and gets better at night when there are less people online. Between 12:00 am and 6:00 am the speeds are pretty good. Try checing at different times and see if your speeds fluxuate at all.

I'm located between Jacksonville and Grants Pass. I have tried different times of day; d/l speeds flux a little bit but pretty solid between 4.75 and 5 meg. But as soon as I throw a router into the mix... down to 700k. Very consistent symptoms. I've been a computer tech for 15 years; not sure where to go with shooting this one as I don't have a ton of experience with cable. Most of my experience is with the T1 and T3 trunks. Thanks for the suggestion.

Don't know what to tell you there you prob have more experience with this then I do.
I have no idea why a router would affect anything in the way it is you.
I have had a router and hub on mine before and no problems with it.
I am running a router right now and I don't believe that is the problem.
You had a router before and experienced no problems ??
    Until recently ??
Doesn't make sense to me that it should cause you a problem like that.
I think I'll try mine without the router to see what happens, I'll post again after I do that.
    Curiosity ?? I guess

Re: Klamath Falls might be good but Medford/ Central Point sucks

Thanks, would be interesting to see your result. This afternoon (Sun) about 2:00 the connection came to a crawl (about 500k) even without router. I called Charter; for the first time, they admitted to me that "they are having some outages in Medford area" and problems should be solved tomorrow or Tuesday. I could have sworn that speeds were great without router and terrible with router; but I will keep watching for the next couple days. Right now I have the router connected and am getting about 275k. Nice for a 5m connection, huh. Wonder if we'll all see credits on our bills. Anyway, post your results without router, would be interesting. Thanks --Brian

    Not a big difference 97Kbps to 251Kbps

Do you live out in Ruch ??

I live off Table Rock near I-5

Hopefully tomorrow or Wednesday they will fix it.

The only time I get close to 5MB is when everyone in Jackson county is asleep

Interesting... thanks. I abandoned the router theory and hooked my Linksys back up. I could have sworn there was a pattern, but I guess sometimes you spend your time looking for zebras, as the saying goes. This morning I got 4m thru the router, but tonight it's down to 200k. I called Charter and the tech could not give me a date. Are you following the posts in the Wash/Oregon Speed Issue thread?

Yeah, I'm right in Ruch. We have DSL here now, I think, and that may be an option.

    Thanks for your tests.... bkiesse@hotmail.com

I just tested mine it seems we might be fixed.
Almost 5 mb at 5:20 pm
    »/testhistory/701203/73f4c

Check yours again hopefully it is better now.
Mine seems to be unless it was a fluke.

My ping is half what it was and it was not bad before.
Down to SF server it is running at 13ms
Was high twenties and thirties before.

I had DSL it is slow compared to cable if it is working right.

This morning at about 8 am: 3.96 meg.

Tonight at 6:30 pm: 210k down/152k up, with a 360 ms ping to Portland.

Fixed? I don't think so!! I'll just have to follow your advice and do my work when everyone in J-co is still asleep.

Re: Klamath Falls might be good but Medford/ Central Point sucks

Holy crap that is as bad or worse then mine.
So far mine is good (today anyway) So if you take your router off do you get 4-5 MB DL speed.

A friend of mine that works with me in Medford.
He is kind of our tech at work.
He lives out past you and complains about the same thing, he thinks it is losing bandwidth to the digital cable subscribers (digital TV) Tivo's (Charters Moxi) ??
    All that crap.
I thought if they fixed mine yours would go along with it.
Must be on a Head End unit to much traffic for one area.

I would trade my router for the speed if it came down to it anyday if it fixed the problem.
Did you test the theory without the router during the day ??

I was not real happy with DSL from Qwest but it is better then what your getting now.(Qwest is or was $26.99 a month 1.5 MB with a 1 year commitment and will stay $26.99 a month for life after that)

The only thing I can suggest is keep track of your speeds and document and call tech support all the time until you can deal with it any more.
I actual got them to credit 5 months worth of HSI at Charter about 3 or 4 years ago, I had to prove it to them and when one of there best techs saw that there was a problem here at my house(and everywhere else in Central Point) they finally got it fixed.
It got to the point that I had two of their tech's cell phone numbers and called them when it got real bad.
Took a few months before they got out here when it was acting up.
Keep on Charter until they fix it.
I'll let you know if mine starts slowing down again(prob a good chance of that)

    Good Luck
    Keep me posted
    Mike

Also post your speeds or put a link in so I can check them out.
Sorry I am not usually so long winded, but this crap really pisses me off I went through it for so long with Charter a few years ago.

Re: Klamath Falls might be good but Medford/ Central Point sucks

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but starting almost exactly at 7:00 tonight I started getting nearly 5 meg, and it's been steady as a rock to a variety of servers. I haven't gotten an evening speed of over 500k for weeks. And the 5 meg is w/router so I gave up on the bad-router theory. I bet the Digital TV is sucking up a lot of b/w. We just have Basic cable, but the TiVo is on the lan to get its scheduling stuff.

I don't know about Clearwire out here. I've heard some not-so-great things with them, so I'll wait the Charter thing out at least for a while.

So far so good; we'll see what tonight brings. I wonder if some circuit got heated up right at 7pm last night--that's when my speed picked up and it's been solid since.
